Book Description
"This report responds to a request by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, dated November 7, 1972, to the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (C R W M) of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council, for advice "concerning the AEC's concepts for the safe storage of high-level solidified waste for an interim period in an engineered storage vacility at or near the surface of the earth. A retrievable surface-storage facility (R S S F) for an interim period (not exceeding 100 years) is understood to be a provisional measure for use while procedures for long-term storage or ultimate disposal of wastes - as in deep geologic media - are being developed, proven, and adopted."--Preface.

Book Description
From joint meeting of the American Nuclear Society and the Atomic Industrial Forum and Nuclear Energy Exhibition; San Francisco, California, USA (11 Nov 1973). A Retrievable Surface Storage facility (RSSF) for the interim storage of solidified high-level nuclear wastes will be built for the USAEC at Richland to serve until a permanent waste repository is established. Design criteria for the RSSF are presented, and the three basic storage concepts currently being evaluated, i.e., storage in cooled water basins, in air-cooled concrete vaults, and in air-cooled steel casks, are discussed. (LCL).
