Interim Report on the SRI Core Language Engine
The Core Language Engine
Author: Hiyan Alshawi
Publisher: Bradford Book
ISBN:
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
The Core Language Engine presents the theoretical and engineering advances embodied in one of the most comprehensive natural language processing systems designed to date. Recent research results from different areas of computational linguistics are integrated into a single elegant design with potential for application to tasks ranging from machine translation to information system interfaces. Bridging the gap between theoretical and implementation oriented literature, The Core Language Engine describes novel analyses and techniques developed by the contributors at SRI International's Cambridge Computer Science Research Centre. It spans topics that include a wide-coverage unification grammar for English syntax and semantics, context-dependent and contextually disambiguated logical form representations, interactive translation, efficient algorithms for parsing and generation, and mechanisms for quantifier scoping, reference resolution, and lexical acquisition. Contents Introduction to the CLE - Logical Forms - Categories and Rules - Unification Based Syntactic Analysis - Semantic Rules for English - Lexical Analysis - Syntactic and Semantic Processing - Quantifier Scopin - Sortal Restrictions - Resolving Quasi Logical Forms - Lexical Acquisition - The CLE in Application Development - Ellipsis, Comparatives, and Generation - Swedish-English QLF Translation

Evaluating Natural Language Processing Systems
Author: Karen Sparck Jones
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540613091
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
This book is about the patterns of connections between brain structures. It reviews progress on the analysis of neuroanatomical connection data and presents six different approaches to data analysis. The results of their application to data from cat and monkey cortex are explored. This volume sheds light on the organization of the brain that is specified by its wiring.

Exploring Time, Tense and Aspect in Natural Language Database Interfaces
Author: Ion Androutsopoulos
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027297479
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 319
Book Description
Advances in temporal databases make it increasingly easier to store time-dependent information, creating a need for facilities that will help end-users access this information. In the context of natural language interaction, significant effort has been devoted to interfaces that allow database queries to be formulated in natural language. Most of the existing interfaces, however, do not support adequately the notion of time. Drawing upon tense and aspect theories, temporal logics, and temporal databases, this cross-discipline book examines relevant issues from the three areas, developing a unified theoretical framework that can be used to build natural language interfaces to temporal databases. The framework features an HPSG mapping from English to a formally defined meaning representation language, and a corresponding mapping to a temporal extension of the SQL database language. The book is accompanied by a freely available prototype interface, built according to the framework, and implemented using Prolog and ALE. This is the first in-depth exploration of the notion of time in natural language database interfaces. It will be particularly interesting to researchers working on natural language interaction, tense and aspect, HPSG, temporal logics, and temporal databases, especially those who wish to learn about time-related issues in other disciplines.

Integration of Natural Language and Vision Processing
Author: Paul Mc Kevitt
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401102732
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 307
Book Description
Although there has been much progress in developing theories, models and systems in the areas of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Vision Processing (VP) there has heretofore been little progress on integrating these subareas of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This book contains a set of edited papers addressing computational models and systems for the integration of NLP and VP. The papers focus on site descriptions such as that of the large Japanese $500 million Real World Computing (RWC) project, on historical philosophical issues, on systems which have been built and which integrate the processing of visual scenes together with language about them, and on spatial relations which appear to be the key to integration. The U.S.A., Japan and the EU are well reflected, showing up the fact that integration is a truly international issue. There is no doubt that all of this will be necessary for the InformationSuperHighways of the future.

The Alvey Natural Language Tools Grammar
Author: Claire Grover
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 330
Book Description
Abstract: "This report provides a detailed description of the fourth and final funded release of the ANLT grammar. It includes a description of both the syntactic and semantic components of the grammar, the ANLT grammar formalism and metagrammar compilation process, and a listing of the complete grammar. It provides some background and explanation for the syntactic and semantic frameworks adopted and pointers to relevant literature. It ends with an assessment of the adequacy and coverage of the fourth grammar and of possible areas for further work."
