If necessary, the instrument can be used to determine whether a given flux from a reactor is moderated or unmoderated. The experimental model contains proportional counters sensitive to fast or slow neutrons; at a tolerance flux of either, the instrument reads in the neighborhood of halfscale. The model case measures about 6 by 6 by 11 in. Power is derived from five 1.5 volt flashlight cells, and the instrument should operate continuously for more than 60 hours at room temperature. A plutonium source is used for a check of sensitivity, to ensure that the instrument is in calibration before use.

The electronic behaviour of the two D-2X radiacmeters serial nos. I and II, has been examined and found to be satisfactory. (See reports for May 1954, and July 1954) The second step, then, in evaluating the instruments, is the examination of the response of the primary detectors to incident radiation, both neutrons and gamma rays. The procedures described here provide for testing each detector separately, in addition to testing the composite instrument as a whole, thus serving to immediately isolate any misbehavior, and by the same token lending added confidence to the result when the tests are completed.
