Beyond the University

Beyond the University PDF Author: Michael S. Roth
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300206550
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
Contentious debates over the benefits—or drawbacks—of a liberal education are as old as America itself. From Benjamin Franklin to the Internet pundits, critics of higher education have attacked its irrelevance and elitism—often calling for more vocational instruction. Thomas Jefferson, by contrast, believed that nurturing a student’s capacity for lifelong learning was useful for science and commerce while also being essential for democracy. In this provocative contribution to the disputes, university president Michael S. Roth focuses on important moments and seminal thinkers in America’s long-running argument over vocational vs. liberal education. Conflicting streams of thought flow through American intellectual history: W. E. B. DuBois’s humanistic principles of pedagogy for newly emancipated slaves developed in opposition to Booker T. Washington’s educational utilitarianism, for example. Jane Addams’s emphasis on the cultivation of empathy and John Dewey’s calls for education as civic engagement were rejected as impractical by those who aimed to train students for particular economic tasks. Roth explores these arguments (and more), considers the state of higher education today, and concludes with a stirring plea for the kind of education that has, since the founding of the nation, cultivated individual freedom, promulgated civic virtue, and instilled hope for the future.

Interdisciplinarity

Interdisciplinarity PDF Author: Andrew Barry
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136658459
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 355

Book Description
The idea that research should become more interdisciplinary has become commonplace. According to influential commentators, the unprecedented complexity of problems such as climate change or the social implications of biomedicine demand interdisciplinary efforts integrating both the social and natural sciences. In this context, the question of whether a given knowledge practice is too disciplinary, or interdisciplinary, or not disciplinary enough has become an issue for governments, research policy makers and funding agencies. Interdisciplinarity, in short, has emerged as a key political preoccupation; yet the term tends to obscure as much as illuminate the diverse practices gathered under its rubric. This volume offers a new approach to theorising interdisciplinarity, showing how the boundaries between the social and natural sciences are being reconfigured. It examines the current preoccupation with interdisciplinarity, notably the ascendance of a particular discourse in which it is associated with a transformation in the relations between science, technology and society. Contributors address attempts to promote collaboration between, on the one hand, the natural sciences and engineering and, on the other, the social sciences, arts and humanities. From ethnography in the IT industry to science and technology studies, environmental science to medical humanities, cybernetics to art-science, the collection interrogates how interdisciplinarity has come to be seen as a solution not only to enhancing relations between science and society, but the pursuit of accountability and the need to foster innovation. Interdisciplinarity is essential reading for scholars, students and policy makers across the social sciences, arts and humanities, including anthropology, geography, sociology, science and technology studies and cultural studies, as well as all those engaged in interdisciplinary research. It will have particular relevance for those concerned with the knowledge economy, science policy, environmental politics, applied anthropology, ELSI research, medical humanities, and art-science.

Science in the Forest, Science in the Past

Science in the Forest, Science in the Past PDF Author: Willard McCarty
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000566455
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
Science in the Forest, Science in the Past: Further Interdisciplinary Explorations comprises of papers from the second of two workshops involving a group of scholars united in the conviction that the great diversity of knowledge claims and practices for which we have evidence must be taken seriously in their own terms rather than by the yardstick of Western modernity. Bringing to bear social anthropology, history and philosophy of science, computer science, classics and sinology among other fields, they argue that the use of such dismissive labels as ‘magic’, ‘superstition’ and the ‘irrational’ masks rather than solves the problem and reject counsels of despair which assume or argue that radically alien beliefs are strictly unintelligible to outsiders and can be understood only from within the system in question. At the same time, they accept that how to proceed to a better understanding of the data in question poses a formidable challenge. Key problems identified in the inaugural workshop, whose proceedings were published in HAU: Journal of Ethnographic Theory (2019) and in HAU Books (2020), provided the basis for asking how obvious pitfalls might be avoided and a new or revised framework within which to pursue these problems proposed. The chapters in this book were originally published in Interdisciplinary Science Reviews.

Book Description
Welcome to the International Conference on Inter Disciplinary Research in Engineering and Technology (ICIDRET) 2015 in DSIIDC, Government of NCT, New Delhi, India, Asia on 29 – 30 April, 2015. If this is your first time to New Delhi, you need to look on more objects which you could never forget in your lifetime. There is much to see and experience at The National Capital of Republic of India. The concept of Inter Disciplinary research was a topic of focus by various departments across the Engineering and Technology area. Flushing with major areas, this ICIDRET ’15 has addressed the E&T areas like Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Bio-Technology, Bio-Engineering, Bio-Medical, Computer Science, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Management and Textile Engineering. This focus has brought a new insight on the learning methodologies and the terminology of accepting the cross definition of engineering and the research into it. We invite you to join us in this inspiring conversation. I am pretty sure that this conference would indulge the information from the various parts of the world and could coin as a global research gathering. With more and more researchers coming into ICIDRET, this event would be as an annual event. This conference is sure that, this edition and the future edition will serve as a wise platform for the people to come with better research methodologies integrating each and every social component globally. If there would have been a thought of not integrating the RJ45 and few pieces of metal / plastic along with a PCB, today we could haven’t used the telephones and mobile phones. With an ear-mark inspiration and constant support from the Global President Dr. S. Prithiv Rajan, ASDF International President Dr. P. Anbuoli, this publication stands in front of your eyes, without them this would haven’t been possible in a very shortest span. Finally, I thank my family, friends, students and colleagues for their constant encouragement and support for making this type of conference. -- Kokula Krishna Hari K Editor-in-Chief www.kokulakrishnaharik.in
