Freight Demand Modeling and Data Improvement

Freight Demand Modeling and Data Improvement PDF Author: Keith M. Chase
Publisher: Transportation Research Board
ISBN: 0309129427
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 90

Book Description
" TRB's second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-C20-RR-1: Freight Demand Modeling and Data Improvement documents the state of the practice for freight demand modeling. The report also explores the fundamental changes in freight modeling, and data and data collection that could help public and private sector decision-makers make better and more informed decisions. SHRP 2 Capacity Project C20, which produced Report S2-C20-RR-1, also produced the following items: A Freight Demand Modeling and Data Improvement Strategic Plan, which outlines seven strategic objectives that are designed to serve as the basis for future innovation in freight travel demand forecasting and data, and to guide both near- and long-term implementation: A speaker's kit, which is intended to be a "starter" set of materials for use in presenting the freight modeling and data improvement strategic plan to a group of interested professionals; and; A 2010 Innovations in Freight Demand Modeling and Data Symposium " -- publisher's description

Modeling Multimodal Freight Transportation Network Performance Under Disruptions

Modeling Multimodal Freight Transportation Network Performance Under Disruptions PDF Author: Jing Dong
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Choice of transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 38

Book Description
"To facilitate a region's freight transportation systems planning and operations and minimize the risk associated with increasing multimodal freight movements, this study presents a modeling framework for evaluating and optimizing freight flows on a multimodal transportation network under disruption. Unexpected events such as earthquakes, floods, and other manmade or natural disasters would cause significant economic loss. When parts of the transportation network are closed or operated at a reduced capacity, the delay of commodity movements would further increase such losses. Shifting to an alternative route or mode might help to mitigate the negative impacts. In this study, a multimodal freight transportation network was developed to simulate commodity movements, evaluate the impacts of disruptions, and develop effective emergency operation plans. A fluid-based dynamic queuing approximation was used to estimate the delays at classification yards and locks caused by disruption. Using the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Freight Analysis Framework version 3 (FAF3) database, a case study was constructed to model the transportation of cereal grains from Iowa to other states. Three hypothetical disruption scenarios were tested: a reduced service level at locks along the Mississippi River, a bridge outage on I-80 at the Missouri River, and severe weather in central Iowa closing the Union Pacific tracks in the area. The impacts of these disruptions were quantified and analyzed using the presented freight network model" (page ii).

Modelling Freight Transport

Modelling Freight Transport PDF Author: Lorant Tavasszy
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 012416708X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
Freight Transport Modelling is a unique new reference book that provides insight into the state-of-the-art of freight modelling. Focusing on models used to support public transport policy analysis, Freight Transport Modelling systematically introduces the latest freight transport modelling approaches and describes the main methods and techniques used to arrive at operational models. As freight transport has grown exponentially in recent decades, policymakers now need to include freight flows in quantitative evaluations of transport systems. Whereas early freight modelling practice was inspired by passenger transport models, by now it has developed its separate stream of methods and techniques inspired by disciplines such as economic geography and supply chain management. Besides summarizing the latest achievements in fundamental research, this book describes the state of practice and advises practitioners on how to cope with typical challenges such as limitations in data availability. - Uniquely focused book exploring the key issues and logistics of freight transport modelling - Highlights the latest approaches and describes the main methods and techniques used to arrive at operational models - Summarizes fundamental research into freight transport modeling, as well as current practices and advice for practitioners facing day-to-day challenges

Book Description
This book discusses various issues of modeling freight and passenger traffic, and explores the common approaches and regional differences. The latter may be a consequence of national legislation or the various approaches that are adopted by scientists around the globe. It focuses on the organization of transcontinental transport and aspects of planning and harmonizing the movement of various transport means, particularly intermodal and multimodal transport. New approaches to the prediction of transportation needs are also considered. Written by international experts, the book is divided into 2 parts: the first part analyzes passenger transport, while the second addresses freight transport. It is intended wide audience, including university professors, graduate and Ph.D. students; transport professionals, and logistics specialist.

Forecasting Statewide Freight Toolkit

Forecasting Statewide Freight Toolkit PDF Author: Cambridge Systematics
Publisher: Transportation Research Board
ISBN: 0309099242
Category : Freight and freightage
Languages : en
Pages : 169

Book Description
Federal planning legislation and regulations now mandate that state departments of transportation and metropolitan planning organizations consider the needs of freight when planning and programming transportation investments. While there are standard techniques used to forecast the movement of people, less attention has been paid to forecasting freight movements, and there are consequently fewer standardized techniques that state and local agencies can adapt to their local situation. This Toolkit is designed to provide transportation planners with the information they need to prepare forecasts of freight transportation by highlighting techniques successfully developed by state agencies across the country.
