Book Description
Climate change is a burning topic in global level which adversely affects agricultural production and livelihoods of our population through increased frequency of droughts and floods. By end of 21st century average global surface temperature may rise 1.4 to 5.80C. In tropical, yield of some crops would decrease with even minimal increases in temperature because they are near their maximum temperature tolerance. So, famine crop (finger millet) is best suited especially for drought stricken areas. It can lie dormant in the soil for weeks after receiving sudden rainfall, spring to life and ready for harvest in short period of time. It contains the most important amino acid (methionine) which is lacking in the diets of millions of the poor and popular among diabetic patients in all over the world due to its slow digestion indicates low blood sugar level. Regarding nutrient management, generally farmers apply chemical fertilizer alone in rainfed situation. But enriched form fertilizers will help to produce greater response. To overcome the problem of climate change, agronomic management practice (INM) will play a significant role to achieve sustainable productivity by farming society.

Recarbonizing global soils – A technical manual of recommended sustainable soil management

Recarbonizing global soils – A technical manual of recommended sustainable soil management PDF Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

ISBN: 9251348936
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 652

Book Description
During the last decades, soil organic carbon (SOC) attracted the attention of a much wider array of specialists beyond agriculture and soil science, as it was proven to be one of the most crucial components of the earth’s climate system, which has a great potential to be managed by humans. Soils as a carbon pool are one of the key factors in several Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 15, “Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss” with the SOC stock being explicitly cited in Indicator 15.3.1. This technical manual is the first attempt to gather, in a standardized format, the existing data on the impacts of the main soil management practices on SOC content in a wide array of environments, including the advantages, drawbacks and constraints. This manual presents different sustainable soil management (SSM) practices at different scales and in different contexts, supported by case studies that have been shown with quantitative data to have a positive effect on SOC stocks and successful experiences of SOC sequestration in practical field applications. Volume 3 includes a total of 49 practices that have a direct impact on SOC sequestration and maintenance in cropland, grassland, integrated systems and farming approaches.

Diversified Agri-food Production Systems for Nutritional Security

Diversified Agri-food Production Systems for Nutritional Security PDF Author: Anup Das
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832542743
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
Nutritional security and ecosystem sustainability are the biggest challenges of the 21st century. Globally ~ 2.3 billion people suffer from malnutrition. According to estimates by the World Bank, malnutrition globally costs ~ $ 3.5 trillion per year. On the other hand, the production and availability of staple food is the major emphasis for conventional farming in developing and underdeveloped countries for assured food security. These staple foods are high in carbohydrates and energy availability but low in nutritional value, such as concerning micronutrient, phytochemical, and vitamin contents. Apart from adequate food, there should be consistent access, availability, and affordability of foods and beverages that are nutrient-dense, promote well-being, and minimize diseases. From the experience of the recent COVID-19 crisis, the importance of adequate dietary habits has been emphasized globally since food nutrients are considered inherent sources of immunomodulation.

Omics of Climate Resilient Small Millets

Omics of Climate Resilient Small Millets PDF Author: Ramesh Namdeo Pudake
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811939071
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
This edited book covers all aspects of omics approaches used for the varietal improvement of millets in changing climatic conditions. Millets are the collection of small-grained cereal grasses, that are grown for human carbohydrate needs. They are among the oldest crops, mainly divided into two groups – Major and small millets based on seed size. Small millets are earlier considered orphan crops, but recently due to their nutritional values, they are getting importance in cultivation. This book explores the genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, and other omics tools that are being widely used to get a clear understanding of mechanistic approaches taken by plant genes to tolerate stress. Various reports are published based on field breeding on these crops, and recently the genome of some of the small millets is released, and many omics studies are published related to its application in varietal improvements. This book reviewed all those recent studies and is of interest to research students, plant breeding scientists, teachers that are working in agriculture and plant biotech universities. Along with this, the book serves as reference material for undergraduate and graduate students of agriculture, and biotechnology. National and international agricultural scientists, policymakers will also find this to be a useful read.
