Pages : 93

Book Description
Cytologic examination of the cerebrospinal fluid is a technically simple, yet productive, diagnostic procedure. Here is a practical guide to this method, as used in the diagnosis of different pathologies. High-quality slides depict the common cerebrospinal fluid cell types, cell anomalies in inflammatory conditions and neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders, and cases with contaminants. It’s required reading for pathologists, as well as neurologists and neurosurgeons.

Atlas of CSF Cytology

ISBN: 9781588905468
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 156

Book Description
A complete, single-volume reference for the cytological examination of cerebrospinal fluid! This full-color atlas presents all the essential information needed for reaching an accurate cytological diagnosis of cerebrospinal fluid and its abnormalities. Designed as a clinical and laboratory reference, Atlas of CSF Cytology provides an overview of all the standard diagnostic techniques and offers insight into advanced methods such as flow cytometry and immunocytological phenotyping. Brief descriptions of the indications, advantages, and limitations are provided for each method. An extensive collection of more than 300 high-quality cytological pictures demonstrating normal cell structures, as well as pathological cells in acute and remission phases enables the reader to understand disease processes. Highlights: Guidelines for the proper handling of specimens, cell preparation, and staining techniques Review of the common sources of error in diagnosis Thorough coverage of the techniques for detecting and classifying inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, and hemorrhagic conditions of the central nervous system Descriptions of the principle features of cells and the classification of tumor cell types according to current W.H.O. standards Full-color images depicting pathological alterations of CSF cells -- an indispensable visual aid to comprehension Atlas of CSF Cytology is ideal for specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, pathology/neuropathology, cytopathology, microbiology, and laboratory medicine, as well as for those internists, pediatricians, and psychiatrists who frequently request cytological examination of the CSF. Though it is written to meet the needs of specialists, the Atlas will also be found accessible and enlightening by interested medical students, interns and residents.

Atlas of Cerebrospinal Fluid Cells

Atlas of Cerebrospinal Fluid Cells PDF Author: H.W. Kölmel
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783540081869
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
The demand for an atlas of CSF cytology has made a second edition necessary very soon. The number of those who have learned to appreciate the value of this simple diagnostic procedure has apparently increased. Optimal methods of cell preparation, lim ited technical requirements and immediate availabil ity of the results have all contributed to this develop ment. In the current edition, primary emphasis has again been placed on selection of informative illustrations and on quality of reproduction. Some figures have been replaced, and some added. The text has been expanded and improved where it seemed appro priate. Malignant lymphomas are treated as a sepa rate topic, rather than as part of the chapter on he moblastoses. I should like to thank Prof. Dr. HANSJORG RIEHM of the pediatric department at Kli nikum Charlottenburg, Freie UniversiHit Berlin (Director: Prof. Dr. HANS HELGE), for his suggestion in this regard, as well as for the material for figures on plate 47 (a-d). My technical assistent, Mrs. CHRISTINE LIGNER, again deserves my special thanks. Her suggestions and her careful cytologic work have been significant contributions to the success of this atlas.

Cerebrospinal Fluid in Clinical Neurology

Cerebrospinal Fluid in Clinical Neurology PDF Author: Florian Deisenhammer
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319012258
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is an invaluable diagnostic tool in clinical neurology, not only in the evaluation of inflammatory, degenerative, and malignant diseases of the nervous system, but also in the diagnosis of all forms of cerebral and subarachnoidal bleedings. The CSF can be easily obtained by lumbar puncture and a set of basic analyses can be conducted using relatively simple laboratory methods. By combining different CSF parameters, a wide range of diagnostic entities can be identified. However, properly interpreting the test results requires a high level of expertise and cannot be achieved by just reporting on individual analytic values. This book covers essential aspects of cerebrospinal fluid analysis and its use in the diagnosis of common neurological diseases. The first part addresses preclinical aspects such as the history of CSF, as well as the anatomical, physiological, and biological background of this valuable fluid. In addition, CSF collection, its preanalytical and methodological implications, and the increasing number of disease-specific markers in CSF are discussed in detail. Lastly, CSF analyses are put into context with clinical syndromes, demonstrating their diagnostic value in neurological clinical practice. Cerebrospinal Fluid in Clinical Neurology helps readers understand the preanalytical and analytical aspects of CSF diagnostics and offers a valuable reference guide for interpreting CSF results during the clinical work-up for neurological patients.

Integrated Neuroscience

Integrated Neuroscience PDF Author: Elliott M. Marcus
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9781402071645
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 768

Book Description
INTEGRATED NEUROSCIENCES This textbook takes as a premise that, in order to make intelligent diagnosis and provide a rational treatment in disorders of the nervous system, it is necessary to develop the capacity to answer the basic questions of clinical neurology: (1) Where is the disease process located? (2) What is the nature of the disease process? The purpose of this textbook is to enable the medical student to acquire the basic information of the neurosciences and neurology and most importantly the ability to apply that information to the solution of clinical problems. The authors also suggest that hospital trips be a part of any Clinical Neurosciences Course so that the student can put into actual practice what he has learned in the classroom. We believe that this textbook will be of value to the student throughout the four years of the medical school curriculum. Medical, psychiatry and neurology residents may also find this text of value as an introduction or review. It is more true in neurology than in any other system of medicine that a firm knowledge of basic science material, that is, the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the nervous system, enables the student and physician to readily arrive at the diagnosis of where the disease process is located and the nature of the most likely pathology. Subsequently that knowledge may be applied to problem solving in clinical situations.
