Book Description
Over the past several years, the Principal Investigator has made significant contributions to the to the understanding of compressible turbulent flows. He has utilized innovative modern optical diagnostics to explore (1) the turbulence structure of wall bounded shear layers, (2) the effects of extra strain rates, such as convex curvature and favorable pressure gradient, on the turbulence structure of wall bounded shear layers, (3) the effect of compressibility on the Reynolds stresses and the turbulence structure of free shear layers, and (4) control of supersonic jets. The latest state-of-the-art optical diagnostics that the PI has been using include Filtered Rayleigh Scattering (FRS) technique for flow visualizations, and Planar Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) technique for 4-instantaneous velocity measurements.

Optical Diagnostics for Flow Processes

Optical Diagnostics for Flow Processes PDF Author: P. Buchhave
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1489912711
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
The origin of optical methods for fluid flow investigations appears to be nontraceable. This is no matter for surprise. After all seeing provides the most direct and common way for humans to learn about their environment. But at the same time some of the most sophisticated methods for doing measurements in fluids are also based on light and often laser light. A very large amount of material has been published in this area over the last two decades. Why then another publication? Well, the field is still in a state of rapid development. It is characterised by the use of results and methods developed within very different areas like optical physics, spectroscopy, communication systems, electronics and computer science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and, of course, fluid dynamics. We are not aware of a book containing both introductory and more advanced material that covers the same material as presented here. The book is the result of a compilation and expansion of material presented at a summer school on Optical Diagnosticsfor Flow Processes, held at RiS0 National Laboratory and the Technical University of Denmark in September 1993. The aim of the course was to provide a solid background for understanding, evaluating, and using modem optical diagnostic methods, addressing Ph. D. students and researchers active in areas of fluid flow research. The disciplines represented by the participants ranged from atmospheric fluid dynamics to biomedicine.

Methods and Instruments for Visual and Optical Diagnostics of Objects and Fast Processes

Methods and Instruments for Visual and Optical Diagnostics of Objects and Fast Processes PDF Author: Gennadiy Sergeevich Evtushenko
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781536135695
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
This book presents new instruments and methods for studying the dynamics of fast processes. The manuscript consists of two parts: Part I discusses the use of high speed metal vapor brightness amplifiers for object and process imaging, and Part II addresses the plasma parameters of a high-voltage nanosecond discharge initiated by a runaway electron beam. Nowadays, the interaction of powerful energy ?uxes with various objects, namely plasma-induced processes, surface modi'cation for operational characteristics improvement, production of new materials and nanoparticles, thermonuclear synthesis and others, is studied in various ?elds of science and technology. As a rule, observing these processes in real time is a challenging problem because of the intense background radiation, the brightness temperature of which reaches thousands or even tens of thousands of degrees. The use of active optical systems with brightness ampli'ers allows one "to monitor" such processes. "Looking through the ?ame" becomes possible due to the use of high spectral brightness of metal vapor active media on self-terminating transitions. The medium serves as an ampli'er in a narrow spectral range, or a "nano'lter," which allows for the viewing of the processes blocked by the broadband background radiation. Metal vapor active media on self-terminating transitions with high pulse repetition frequencies (PRF) and modern high-speed video cameras have been used to design a laser monitor. Optical systems based on such an amplifier have been used for monitoring a number of objects and high speed processes, including the diagnostics of fast discharges. Pulse-periodic high-voltage nanosecond discharge in high-pressure gases initiated by runaway electrons in a non-uniform electric field is a promising method for generating the non-equilibrium low-temperature plasma. The main plasma parameters of the pulse and pulse-periodic high-voltage nanosecond discharges initiated by runaway electrons were determined with spectral methods. The results of investigations of colored jets that occur during the explosion of microinhomogeneities on the surface of electrodes and gas-dynamic processes that occur after nanosecond discharge initiated by runaway electrons in the pulse-periodic mode in atmospheric pressured air are presented.

Book Description
As part of the DoD-MURI research program entitled 'Modeling and control of Advanced Chemical Vapor Deposition Processes: the Control of Defects in Mixed III-V Compound Semiconductors' (Grant F49620-95-1-0447), DURIP funding was provided to establish a real-time optical characterization facility to study thin-film growth processes extended to super-atmospheric pressures. The extension of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to operating conditions at super-atmospheric pressures mandated validation of: (a) Simulations of surface reaction kinetics; (b) Simulations of homogeneous gas phase reactions coupled to transport in laminar high density vapor flows; and (c) the development of experimental methods for the detection of onset of turbulence, that is, verification of laminar flow under conditions of high pressure OMCVD.
