Christian Fundamentalism and the Culture of Disenchantment

Christian Fundamentalism and the Culture of Disenchantment PDF Author: Paul Maltby
Publisher: University of Virginia Press
ISBN: 0813933463
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 406

Book Description
Within the familiar clash of religious conservatism and secular liberalism Paul Maltby finds a deeper discord: an antipathy between Christian fundamentalism and the postmodern culture of disenchantment. Arguing that each camp represents the poles of America's virulent culture wars, he shows how the cultural identity, lifestyle, and political commitments of many Americans match either the fundamentalist profile of one who cleaves to metaphysical and authoritarian beliefs or the postmodern profile of one who is disposed to critical inquiry and radical-democratic values. Maltby offers a critique that operates in both directions. His use of the resources of postmodern theory to contest fundamentalism's doctrinal claims, ultra-right politics, anti-environmentalism, and conservative aesthetics informs his engagement with contemporary fundamentalist painting, spiritual warfare fiction, dominionist attitudes to nature, and a profoundly undemocratic interpretation of Christianity. At the same time, Maltby identifies some of fundamentalism’s legitimate spiritual concerns, assesses the cost of perpetual critique, and exposes the deficit of spiritual meaning that haunts the culture of disenchantment.

A Window into the Lives of Adam and Eve and Other Ancestors

A Window into the Lives of Adam and Eve and Other Ancestors PDF Author: Terry Dodd
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1449702678
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 189

Book Description
Ancestors is a fascinating series of both biblical descriptions and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the lives of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, and on down the ancestral line to Noah and his family. Also revealed in each chapter are the lives of a rugged pioneering family making their way through much of the 1800s as part of one of the greatest human migrations in history. Terry interestingly weaves together parallel narratives involving his pioneer ancestors and a retelling of the Genesis story. In doing so, both sets of ancestors are thus presented in a way that puts these peoples lives into a day-by-day perspective. Wayne Clark, Bible Teacher and Minister in the Marketplace Thank you for allowing me to read your historical fiction manuscript, Ancestors. I found it very interesting! Dr. Richard Lee, founding pastor, First Redeemer Church, and general editor, The American Patriots Bible
