Earthquake and Atmospheric Hazards

Earthquake and Atmospheric Hazards PDF Author: Mohammed I. El-Sabh
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401150346
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 214

Book Description
Earthquakes and Atmospheric Hazards contains a selection of papers that were presented as part of the Sixth International Symposium on Natural and Man-Made Hazards (HAZARDS-96) held in Toronto, Canada during July, 1996. The Symposium was very timely, given the large number of natural disasters that have occurred in various parts of the world during the 1990s, the United Nations' International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR). The human reaction to these disasters has varied widely from one event to the next and the economic and social costs have been immense with damage running into billions of dollars. Having in everyone's mind the Northridge, California (1994) and the Kobe, Japan (1995) earthquakes, the volcanoes in the Philippines, the cyclones and related storm surges in Bangladesh, and the floods in North America and Europe caused by heavy rains, the Symposium attracted more than one hundred papers covering various aspects of these events. The eleven papers included in this volume deal with the scientific and management issues of those earthquakes and atmospheric hazards that occurred during the late 1990s, with emphasis on the preparedness aspects. A summary report of the HAZARDS-96 Symposium and recommendations adopted by the participants is also included. Earthquakes and Atmospheric Hazards forms an excellent reference for scientists, students, engineers, the insurance industry, authorities specializing in public safety and natural hazards preparedness and mitigation plans.

Geotechnical Reconnaissance of the Effects of the January 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake, Japan

Geotechnical Reconnaissance of the Effects of the January 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake, Japan PDF Author: Koichi Akai
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 0788125389
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
The Jan. 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake was one of the worst disasters to hit Japan in almost half a century. It has been compared in its impact to the great Kanto (Tokyo) Earthquake of 1923. The Kobe-Osaka region held many similarities in its geologic and tectonic setting to many areas along the West Coast, and possibly, other areas of the U.S. A geotechnical reconnaissance to identify the relevant problems and issues was organized. This report provides a timely, first-hand overview of the type and extent of the geotechnical aspects of the damage.

Soil Liquefaction

Soil Liquefaction PDF Author: Mike Jefferies
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1482213672
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 700

Book Description
A Rigorous and Definitive Guide to Soil LiquefactionSoil liquefaction occurs when soil loses much of its strength or stiffness for a time-usually a few minutes or less-and which may then cause structural failure, financial loss, and even death. It can occur during earthquakes, from static loading, or even from traffic-induced vibration. It occurs w

Pre-failure Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials

Pre-failure Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials PDF Author: Jamiolkowski

Category : Deformations (Mechanics)
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
The second of two volumes from the 1999 conference (v.1 was published in 1999) makes available the opening lecture on pre-failure behavior of soils as construction materials, as well as 24 contributions on various themes of the conference, laboratory tests, in situ tests, stress-strain behavior, applications and case histories. Some specific topics include time-dependent deformation characteristics of stiff geomaterials, boundary value problems in geotechnical engineering, and the effect of reinforcement due to choice of geogrid. Recent Advances in Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and Microzonation

Recent Advances in Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and Microzonation PDF Author: Atilla Ansal
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402018274
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
Outstanding advances have been achieved on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and Microzonation in the last decade mostly due to the increase in the recorded instrumental in-situ data and large number of case studies conducted in analyzing the observed effects during the recent major earthquakes. During the 15th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering held in Istanbul in August 2001, the Technical Committee of Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering, (TC4) of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering organised a regional seminar on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Microzonation where an effort has been made to present the recent advances in the field by eminent scientists and researchers. The book idea was first suggested by the participants of this seminar. The purpose of this book as well as of the seminar was to present the broad spectrum of earthquake geotechnical engineering and seismic microzonation including strong ground motion, site characterisation, site effects, liquefaction, seismic microzonation, solid waste landfills and foundation engineering. The subject matter requires multidisciplinary input from different fields of engineering seismology, soil dynamics, geotechnical and structural engineering. The chapters in this book are prepared by some of the distinguished lecturers who took part in the seminar supplemented with contributions of few distinguished experts in the field of earthquake geotechnical engineering. The editor would like to express his gratitude to all authors for their interest and efforts in preparing their manuscripts. Without their enthusiasm and support, it would not have been possible to complete this book.
