Book Description
"No attainment is ever final" Vascular disorders of the optic disc and nerve are important not only to the ophthalmologist but also to the neurologist and the internist. To the first specialty group they represent one cause of blindness or severe visual impairment; to the second group the optic disc edema and optic atrophy seen in these disorders can pose serious problems of diagnosis, or give indica tions of the involvement of the cerebral circulation; while to the last group they are frequently indicative of systemic disease, particularly of the cardiovas cular system. Recent advances in our knowledge of the blood supply of the optic nerve head have shed a significant new light on the subject. With the recent advent of fluorescein fundus angiography, an extra dimension has been added to the study of the ocular and optic disc circulations, and we have entered into a new era in the understanding of ocular vascular disorders "in vivo". In the pre-angiography era, postmortem injection studies, although very valuable, did not completely reveal the vascular pattern of the optic disc in the living, in health, and disease. The ophthalmoscope, without doubt, has been valuable in assessing optic disc lesions, but could not give us informa tion on the circulation of the eye and optic disc "in vivo".

Clinical Pathways in Neuro-Ophthalmology: An Evidence-Based Approach, Third Edition reflects the authors' extensive training and experience in the field of neuro-ophthalmology, as well as updates in the field. Stacy Smith, Andrew Lee, Paul Brazis, and an impressive group of contributors have written an unsurpassed learning tool on how to manage patients with known or presumed neuro-ophthalmologic conditions, in the most logical, straightforward, and cost-effective manner. The authors share significant clinical pearls and knowledge throughout 20 chapters. The book lays a solid foundation on the management of neurologic eye disorders including symptoms, ophthalmologic testing, diagnosis, and treatment. Among the discussed disorders are anterior and retrobulbar optic neuropathies, disorders of ocular motility and alignment, lid abnormalities, and anisocoria. Insights are provided on key topics including the use of office examinations, laboratory tests, and neuroimaging studies to make an ophthalmologic diagnosis; and ophthalmologic therapy to treat eye movement disorders such as nystagmus. Key Highlights Unique graphic algorithms help clinicians differentiate conditions with frequently overlapping clinical manifestations The evaluation and treatment of various neuro-ophthalmologic processes, stratified by four classes of evidence and four levels of clinical recommendation A basic set of references for each subject enables readers to expand knowledge High quality four-color clinical images enhance learning This book is essential reading for neuro-ophthalmologists, ophthalmologists, neurologists, and residents and fellows in these fields of medicine.

The wide spectrum of symptoms is taken from extensive clinical experience; they are critically analysed and compared to the ophthalmological, neurosurgical, and neuroradiological literature. The monograph is an excellent source for the ophthalmologic and neurologic clinician who is the first to be confronted with symptoms of optic nerve lesions. For the radiologist, it offers a clear, didactic overview of typical pathological changes of the most important lesions. For the neurosurgeon, the discussion of optimal approach and intraoperative findings points to the possibility of early microsurgical intervention that retains as much function as possible.

Optic Nerve Disorders

Optic Nerve Disorders PDF Author: Lanning B. Kline
Publisher: American Academy of Ophthalmol
ISBN: 9780195312812
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
A guide to the relevant literature on a wide variety of clinical diseases of the optic nerve that will give the clinician a handy reference to assist in both their diagnosis and management. It provide a succinct, yet comprehensive review of optic nerve disorders commonly encountered in clinical practice, briefly reviews the anatomy and physiology of the optic nerve, and outlines those techniques of particular importance during clinical testing of optic nerve function. Chapter 1 reviews the major anatomic aspects of the optic nerve at both a macroscopic and a microscopic level, and discusses the critical role of axonal transport in optic nerve physiology. Chapter 2 takes the reader back to basics, emphasizing the importance of obtaining a detailed patient history and performing a careful ophthalmologic examination. Chapters 3 through 9 cover the major clinical disorders affecting the optic nerve: papilledema, optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy, compression of the anterior visual pathways, developmental and hereditary optic nerve disorders, toxic and nutritional optic neuropathy, and traumatic optic neuropathy. OCT and Imaging in Central Nervous System Diseases

OCT and Imaging in Central Nervous System Diseases PDF Author: Andrzej Grzybowski
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030262693
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 560

Book Description
The second edition of OCT and Imaging in Central Nervous System Diseases offers updated state-of-the-art advances using optical coherence tomography (OCT) regrading neuronal loss within the retina. Detailed information on the OCT imaging and interpretation is provided for the evaluation of disease progression in numerous neurodegenerative disorders and as a biological marker of neuroaxonal injury. Covering disorders like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, intracranial hypertension, Friedreich’s ataxia, schizophrenia, hereditary optic neuropathies, glaucoma, and amblyopia, readers will given insights into effects on the retina and the and optic nerve. Individual chapters are also devoted to OCT technique, new OCT technology in neuro-ophthalmology, OCT and pharmacological treatment, and the use of OCT in animal models. Similar to the first edition, this book is an excellent and richly illustrated reference for diagnosis of many retinal diseases and monitoring of surgical and medical treatment. OCT allows to study vision from of the retina to the optic tracts. Retinal axons in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) are non-myelinated until they penetrate the lamina cribrosa. Hence, the RNFL is an ideal structure for visualization of any process of neurodegeneration, neuroprotection, or regeneration. By documenting the ability of OCT to provide key information on CNS diseases, this book illustrates convincingly that the eye is indeed the “window to the brain”.
