Insect Behavior

Insect Behavior PDF Author: Alex Córdoba-Aguilar
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192518097
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 448

Book Description
Insects display a staggering diversity of behaviors. Studying these systems provides insights into a wide range of ecological, evolutionary, and behavioral questions including the genetics of behavior, phenotypic plasticity, chemical communication, and the evolution of life-history traits. This accessible text offers a new approach that provides the reader with the necessary theoretical and conceptual foundations, at different hierarchical levels, to understand insect behavior. The book is divided into three main sections: mechanisms, ecological and evolutionary consequences, and applied issues. The final section places the preceding chapters within a framework of current threats to human survival - climate change, disease, and food security - before providing suggestions and insights as to how we can utilize an understanding of insect behavior to control and/or ameliorate them. Each chapter provides a concise, authoritative review of the conceptual, theoretical, and methodological foundations of each topic.

Nerve Cells and Insect Behavior

Nerve Cells and Insect Behavior PDF Author: Kenneth David Roeder
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 9780674608016
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Insects are ideal subjects for neurophysiological studies. This classic volume relates the activities of nerve cells to the activities of insects, something that had never been attempted when the book first appeared in 1963. In several elegant experiments, Roeder shows how stimulus and behavior are related through the nervous system.

Chemicals Controlling Insect Behavior

Chemicals Controlling Insect Behavior PDF Author: Morton Beroza
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323160573
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 185

Book Description
Chemicals Controlling Insect Behavior consists of papers originally presented at the Symposium on Chemicals Controlling Insect Behavior at the 157th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on April 16, 1969. Organized into seven chapters, this book presents information on insect pheromones, insect defense mechanisms, and other insect attractants and repellent. It specifically describes the sex pheromones of the Lepidoptera, the attractant pheromones of Coleoptera, and the boll weevil sex attractant. The chemical basis of insect sociality and arthropod defensive secretions are also explained. Lastly, the practice in programs within the USDA relating toinsect attractants and repellents is discussed. This book will serve as groundwork for even greater and more rapid progress in this field of interest. It will be useful to chemists, biochemists, biologists, entomologists, and others working to control insect pests.

Principles of Insect Behaviour, 2nd Ed.

Principles of Insect Behaviour, 2nd Ed. PDF Author: V.B. Awasthi
Publisher: Scientific Publishers
ISBN: 9386237865
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
The aim of writing this book has been to provide an account of the principles of insect behaviour for the post graduate students of Entomology and general Zoology of all the Universities and Research Institutions as well as to the research scholars engaged in the study of different aspects of Insect behaviour. It is also useful to general readers who have basic knowledge of Biology and have curiosity to know why the insects are vividly coloured, have peculiar shapes, produce sound and light; how they communicate and why bees and wasps sting when disturbed. Significance of insects in pollination of plants associated with the production of seeds, gains and fruits, the role of hormones, pheromones and other chemicals controlling various vital events of the insect behaviour has also been described. The importance of insect migration, control of insect pests by behavioural means has also been discussed. Thus, this book deals with almost all major aspects of insect behaviour. It is hoped that this book will be useful not only to the students of Entomology-Zoology and research scholars of insect behaviour, but also to naturalists who wish to know about some of the mysteries of these small creatures and their lifestyle.

Neural Basis of Elementary Behavior in Stick Insects

Neural Basis of Elementary Behavior in Stick Insects PDF Author: Ulrich Bässler
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642688136
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 181

Book Description
This monograph represents the current status of neuro ethological research on the diurnal behavior of the stick in sect, Carausius morosus. The growing profusion of inter related studies, many of which are published only in German, makes an overview of this field increasingly difficult. Many stick insect results contribute to general problems like con trol of catalepsy, control of walking, program-dependent reactions and control of joint position. For this reason I decided to compile and synthesize the results that are pre sently available even though the analyses are far from con cluded. In addition to both published and unpublished results of the group in Kaiserslautern (Bassler, Cruse, Ebner, Graham, Pfluger, Storrer, as well as doctoral and masters students), I have drawn upon the literature which had ap peared as of summer 1981. This includes above all the work of Godden and of Wendler and his colleagues in Cologne. A summary of the anatomical and physiological background, necessary for an understanding of these investigations, is provided in an appendix (Chap. 6). Methodological details must be obtained from the original publications. Figures for which no source is given are from my own studies. I intend to update this monograph on an annual basis. Requests for these supplements should be directed to me in Kaiserslautern. I would like to express my appreciation to all members of the group in Kaiserslautern for their constructive discussions, their unflagging cooperation, and their permission to include hitherto unpublished results.
