This work is a product of the Inscriptions of India programme of the Indian Council of Historical Research, undertaken with a view to make inscriptions, dating from circa sixth to fourteenth century a.d., available in handy volumes. Part I of the volume introduces Sarabha-puriyas, Panduvamsins and Somavamsins, who played a major role in shaping the destinies of the Chhattisgarh (Kosala) and the adjoining region of Orissa from about sixth to the early twelfth century a.d. It provides a background to the study of the inscriptions by attempting to deal with their formal aspects like the format, palaeography, language, orthography, contents and methods of dating and to trace, for the first time, the evolution of their draft. Part II presents the formal and historical aspects of the inscrip-tions, critically edited texts and fairly compre-hensive abstracts of the records of the Sarabha-puriyas, Panduvamsins of Mekala and South Kosala, and Somavamsins of Kosala and Orissa. It also includes allied inscriptions like the Mallar plates of the Amararyakula chief Vyaghraraja and the Malga plates of Samanta Indraraja. Some of these inscriptions have not yet been published anywhere.

The deciphering of the Indus script has met with suspicion and is exposed to ridicule even. Many people are nowadays of the opinion that the Indus script is altogether indecipherable, if not a bilingual of considerable size turns up. The approach to a decipherment presented in this volume makes avail of a bilingual, too, but its masterkey is the discovering of the symbolic connection of the Indus signs with the metaphoric language of the Rg-Veda. Nearly 200 inscriptions, among them the longest and those with the most interesting motifs, have been decoded here by setting them syllable for syllable in relation to Rg-Vedic verses. The results that were gained by this method for the pictographic values of the Indus signs are surprising and far beyond the possibilities of the most daring phantasy. At the same time many problems of the Rg-Veda could be solved or new insights be won.

Research work on coastal Bengal has mostly focused on maritime trading networks. In a clear departure from the existing scholarship, this volume questions the linearity of considering trade as the sole determinant of creation of settlement in the coastal regions. Focusing on settlement strategies, Chattopadhyay unravels how human societies, through successive generations, have adapted to the coastal environment and bioregime. First-hand data, procured through extensive fieldwork, forms the sound basis of this work. From structural remains, ceramic and bone implements, and stone tools, to terracotta figurines and inscriptions, a vast array of sources, including epigraphic and literary sources, is analysed.
