A Brief Inquiry Into the Meaning of Sin and Faith

A Brief Inquiry Into the Meaning of Sin and Faith PDF Author: John Rawls
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 9780674033313
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 292

Book Description
John Rawls never published anything about his own religious beliefs, but after his death two texts were discovered which shed extraordinary light on the subject. A Brief Inquiry into the Meaning of Sin and Faith is Rawls’s undergraduate senior thesis, submitted in December 1942, just before he entered the army. At that time Rawls was deeply religious; the thesis is a significant work of theological ethics, of interest both in itself and because of its relation to his mature writings. “On My Religion,” a short statement drafted in 1997, describes the history of his religious beliefs and attitudes toward religion, including his abandonment of orthodoxy during World War II. The present volume includes these two texts, together with an Introduction by Joshua Cohen and Thomas Nagel, which discusses their relation to Rawls’s published work, and an essay by Robert Merrihew Adams, which places the thesis in its theological context. The texts display the profound engagement with religion that forms the background of Rawls’s later views on the importance of separating religion and politics. Moreover, the moral and social convictions that the thesis expresses in religious form are related in illuminating ways to the central ideas of Rawls’s later writings. His notions of sin, faith, and community are simultaneously moral and theological, and prefigure the moral outlook found in Theory of Justice.

Languages : en
Pages : 468

Book Description
The enormous cultural impact of the Bible--and in particular, the New Testament--has given people of all backgrounds and traditions at least some familiarity with it. Yet the Bible remains one of the most misread and misunderstood books of all time. Given the sheer variety of interpretive and critical methods, perhaps this isn't altogether surprising. In Inquiry into the New Testament: Ancient Context to Contemporary Significance, David Landry offers a readable, informed, and thorough introduction to this important collection of books. Teachable and ecumenical, the text includes methodological tools, reading guides, key terminology, review and discussion questions, images, and recommendations for further reading that will equip students to understand both Early Christianity and its foundational texts. With sections on literary and historical context, source criticism, interpretive lenses, the formation of the canon, the books of the New Testament as well as noncanonical gospels, and contemporary application, Inquiry into the New Testament highlights not only the ancient importance of the New Testament, but its continued modern significance, as well.

Book Description
Inquiry into Math, Science and Technology for Teaching Young Children uses current theory as foundation for the rich and varied math and science curriculum in preschool and kindergarten. The curriculum in this text easily embraces developmentally appropriate practice, emergent curriculum, Reggio Emilia and the Project Approach. Students can connect the rich math and science curriculum with the national standards in math and science plus the NAEYC Early Childhood Professional Preparation Standards. By using the ways we know children learn best, students are guided to develop their own curriculum for children while incorporating the national standards. The text guides early childhood students to inquire how children learn by capturing the innate curiosity and emerging thinking skills of young children. The writing of this text invites students to explore math and science inquiry themselves, to engage in the curiosity and innovative thinking of young children, and become immersed in their new concept of teaching through experiencing children's learning.

The Soul in the Unseen World

The Soul in the Unseen World PDF Author: R. E. Hutton
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331310990
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 438

Book Description
Excerpt from The Soul in the Unseen World: An Inquiry Into the Doctrine of the Intermediate State The Shadow of Death falls so frequently across the pathway of life that the thought of "the things that are to come hereafter" is one from which there is no escape. St. Paul, in his Epistle to the Thessalonians, says, "I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope." The Apostle then dwells upon the Second Advent, and the rising again of those who sleep in the dust of the earth. He briefly sums up the joy of the new life in the words, "so shall we ever be with the Lord," and adds, "wherefore comfort one another" (i.e. exhort or strengthen one another) "with these words." St. Paul might have dwelt upon other aspects of the life hereafter, such as the meeting again with those whom we have "loved long since, and lost awhile," but he does not do so. He has a profound sense that the Presence of Christ is the supreme need of the soul. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
