Empire of Sacrifice

Empire of Sacrifice PDF Author: Jon Pahl
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814768954
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
It is widely recognized that American culture is both exceptionally religious and exceptionally violent. Americans participate in religious communities in high numbers, yet American citizens also own guns at rates far beyond those of citizens in other industrialized nations. Since 9/11, United States scholars have understandably discussed religious violence in terms of terrorist acts, a focus that follows United States policy. Yet, according to Jon Pahl, to identify religious violence only with terrorism fails to address the long history of American violence rooted in religion throughout the country’s history. In essence, Americans have found ways to consider blessed some very brutal attitudes and behaviors both domestically and globally. In Empire of Sacrifice, Pahl explains how both of these distinctive features of American culture work together by exploring how constructions along the lines of age, race, and gender have operated to centralize cultural power across American civil or cultural religions in ways that don’t always appear to be "religious" at all. Pahl traces the development of these forms of systemic violence throughout American history, using evidence from popular culture, including movies such as Rebel without a Cause and Reefer Madness and works of literature such as The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and The Handmaid's Tale, to illuminate historical events. Throughout, Pahl focuses an intense light on the complex and durable interactions between religion and violence in American history, from Puritan Boston to George W. Bush’s Baghdad.

Revelation: A Book Of Symbols Made Easy

Revelation: A Book Of Symbols Made Easy PDF Author: John Addicks
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN: 1634170695
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 283

Book Description
Author John T. Addicks Jr. paints a grim but realistic picture of what is to come on this earth based on what is written in the book of Revelation—the Rapture, the Tribulation, and the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. As a tool used by God to help everyone prepare for the end times, John presents us with facts gathered from the Bible to convince us to choose what is right and to walk the right path to God. He shows us what will happen (and it will happen) to everyone on this earth, and no one will be spared. And only God knows when this will happen. John also shows us, through a short story, probable situations that might happen once these events will occur. His one goal for all this is to save everyone from meeting this dire and horrible fate. He wants all of us to realize the error of our ways and repent and ask forgiveness from God—before it’s too late.

The Eucharistic Pamphlets of Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt

The Eucharistic Pamphlets of Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt PDF Author:
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 0271091126
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt played a key role in the development of the evangelical understanding of the Lord's Supper. In 1521 he wrote several pamphlets urging a reform of the Mass. In 1524 he broke with Martin Luther and published a second group of pamphlets rejecting the traditional belief in Christ's corporeal presence in the Eucharist. Despite the importance of Karlstadt's tracts, they are little known today, and his understanding of the Lord's Supper is often reduced to a caricature. For the first time, Amy Nelson Burnett translates his thirteen pamphlets into English, illuminating Karlstadt's importance for the Reformation debate over the Eucharist and his contribution to what would become Reformed sacramental theology.

Lucifer

Lucifer PDF Author: Kenneth Gullett
Publisher: XinXii
ISBN: 3960281471
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 144

Book Description
Lucifer’s name is mentioned only once in scripture, yet, he remains a powerful evil influence over the world. This has been the case from the time of Adam and Eve to today and will remain so until final judgment is executed upon the Earth. What is Lucifer’s ultimate goal? How can we fight such a daunting adversary when angels themselves, with their supernatural strength, dare not contend with him? Furthermore, since the Bible tells us that Lucifer is the god of this world, what kind of merchandise does he use in tempting us to sin? The scripture is clear in its description of who he is and what he intends. Being the fallible beings that we are, how can we resist the evil temptations that can draw us away from the True God of heaven who is the Creator of all things? It is God. Who separated the light from the darkness, according to Genesis chapter one, and it is He who separates good and evil through His living Word, Jesus Christ; therefore, it’s in Him alone that we have hope and salvation, not in Lucifer, nor in ourselves. This work is intended to reveal who Lucifer, our great adversary, really is, his attributes, merchandise, and his goals. But, foremost, through this work, the true King of Kings and Lord of Lords will also be revealed..

Dreamwork and Self-Healing

Dreamwork and Self-Healing PDF Author: Greg Bogart
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429912994
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 347

Book Description
There have been many previous books on the physiology of dreaming, the history of dream interpretation, and the meaning of specific dream symbols. But there have been relatively few books exploring the moment-by-moment process of interpreting dreams. This book guides you through this interpretive process, and illustrates how dreamwork promotes emotional, relational, and spiritual transformation. It explores how working with dreams enhances our emotional life, deepens our capacity for relationship, and helps us gracefully navigate change and transitions. The author shows that dreamwork is a natural antidepressant, is effective in transforming anger, bereavement, couples conflicts and impasses, and aids the process of individuation. The book explores archetypal themes and complexes, synchronistic experiences and spiritual awakening in dreams, and representations of the body in dreams. The final chapter, "Taming Wild Horses", explores animal dream symbolism and its importance for enhancing our human sexuality. The book also describes the Dream Mandala, a method of self-transformation through the union of opposites - the charged polarities of the personality.

King Manasseh and Child Sacrifice

King Manasseh and Child Sacrifice PDF Author: Francesca Stavrakopoulou
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110899647
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 424

Book Description
The Hebrew Bible portrays King Manasseh and child sacrifice as the most reprehensible person and the most objectionable practice within the story of 'Israel'. This monograph suggests that historically, neither were as deviant as the Hebrew Bible appears to insist. Through careful historical reconstruction, it is argued that Manasseh was one of Judah's most successful monarchs, and child sacrifice played a central role in ancient Judahite religious practice. The biblical writers, motivated by ideological concerns, have thus deliberately distorted the truth about Manasseh and child sacrifice.
