Child injuries are largely absent from child survival initiatives presently on the global agenda. Through this report, the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund and many partners have set out to elevate child injury to a priority for the global public health and development communities. This publication reviews existing and (where possible) emerging federal, provincial, and territorial injury-related legislation addressing the safety of children and youth in Canada, and reports on the effectiveness of legislative interventions in Canada and abroad. The focus is on legislation which encompasses a broad range of passive measures which tend to be directed toward consumer product and environmental risk factors. Section I outlines the research methodology used and past breakthroughs in injury control as well as reported research as it relates to existing Canadian legislation.
