Summarizes results of a study conducted to investigate species composition, stand structure, and rate of ingress of natural regeneration during the first 20 years following clear-cutting by the tree-length logging method in north- western Ontario. In 1990 and 1991, 96 plantations in that region were assessed, with the following data collected for planted trees and natural regeneration: tree species, site, seedbed type, height, and density. Some plots were destructively sampled to determine total tree age in order to estimate the rate of ingress of natural regeneration. Results have relevance for predicting the probability of occurrence and density of natural regeneration, and for the timing of regeneration surveys.

Presents results of a study that describes the stand structure and composition of selected full-tree harvested sites about ten years after harvest, with examination of evidence for ingress of natural regeneration. Sampled sites were stratified by seedbed condition and the pre-harvest vegetation type they supported; seedbeds were classified as either intact/mixed forest floor or scalped/mineral soil exposed. Vegetation types were amalgamated into ecologically similar groups or treatment units. Most sites were classified as black spruce-jack pine/feathermoss with intact/mixed forest floor seedbeds. Both the rate of natural ingress over the first seven years of stand development and the resultant stand structure and composition are noted.

The objective of this paper is to provide a global review of the non-wood uses of conifers. For the purposes of this paper, conifers are defined as trees and shrubs of the botanical orders Coniferales, Taxales and Ginkgoales (Rushforth 1987). Although some services are briefly mentioned, the focus of this paper is on products which conifers provide species, which are important sources of non-wood forest products, and places where these products are harvested. With the exception of essential oils, which can be obtained from several parts of the tree, the products described are organized by the part of the tree from which they are obtained (e.g. foliage, bark and roots, resin, seeds and cones).
