THE INFRARED SPECTRUM OF HYDROGEN FLUORIDE: LINE POSITIONS AND LINE SHAPES. PDF Author:

Book Description
The true shape of the rotational absorption lines of the hydrogen fluoride fundamental band was investigated. The line shapes were to be measured at pressures where pressure broadening made the only significant contribution to the true line shape. The experimental aspects of this investigation are discussed. All data were taken with the vacuum-grating spectrograph recently completed at the University of Tennessee. The results of the line center and line shape measurements are presented. Twentyone fundamental and seventeen first overtone line centers were measured at low pressure with an estimated accuracy of! 1/0.02 cm. The fundamental and first overtone band centers were calculated to be 1/3961.43 cm and 1/7750.83 cm, respectively. The results of this investigation and suggestions for future experiments in this field are presented.

Book Description
The aim of this investigation was to determine experimentally the true line shape and line position for as many as possible of the high J rotational absorption lines in the hydrogen fluoride fundamental band. The line shapes were to be determined at identical temperatures and at pressures where pressure broadening made the only significant contribution to the line shape. All data were taken on the high resolution vacuum-grating spectrometer. The HF lines were used as internal standards for calibrating purposes. The R(5) line of the first overtone of CO was used to determine the slit function to correct measured line shapes for distortions caused by instrumental broadening. The line position of R(11) was measured to be 4320.97 waves per cm. The line shapes of R(9), R(10), and R(11) were determined and found to be truly Lorentzian.

An Examination of the Far Infrared Spectrum of Hydrogen Fluoride

Book Description
The purpose of the investigation was to determine the frequencies, the ground state rotational constants, the intensities, and the half widths of as many of the pure rotational absorption lines of hydrogen fluoride as could be measured. The problem, in part, required the development of a far infrared spectrometer. This was accomplished by the redesign and reconstruction of a PerkinElmer Model 12B prism instrument. The general techniques of far infrared instrumentation are discussed in detail and their application to this particular instrument explained. The vacuum wave numbers of the line centers of the first seventeen lines of the pure rotational spectrum of hydrogen fluoride were measured. These lines map the region between 41.08 cm( -1) and 658.54 cm( -1). The equivalent widths for fifteen lines were measured at several different pressures and found to be directly proportional to the pressure over the range of measurement. (Author).

Line Intensity and Pressure Broadening Studies in Hydrogen Fluoride and Other Problems in Infrared Spectroscopy

Line Intensity and Pressure Broadening Studies in Hydrogen Fluoride and Other Problems in Infrared Spectroscopy PDF Author: Alvin H. Nielsen

Book Description
The principal activity under the contract was to carry out experiments which would give information about the shapes, shifts, and effects of self-broadening of spectral lines using the vibration-rotation lines in the fundamental infrared band of Hydrogen Fluoride as the medium for measurement. All measurements were made with a high-dispersion vacuum-grating infrared spectrometer capable of resolution to something bett than 0.1/cm in the region of the HF fundamental. Slit functions were carefully determined using absorption lines from the fundamental of CO at very low pressures. Computational methods were developed making it possible to determine true line shapes accurately. Measured line shapes were compared with predicted Lorentz line shapes. The Lorentz parameter was obtained by the equivalentwidth method for the pressure broadened spectral lines in the HF fundamental from m = -6 to m = +12. Investigations of the infrared spectra of several molecules such as CO2, T2O, CH3C1 are included. Molecular constants are listed. (Author).
