Study of Cluster Ions by Mass Spectrometry and Optical Spectroscopy PDF Author: Arvind Kumar Saxena
Publisher: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

Pages : 84

Book Description
The course of experiments described in this book are focused to provide insight into the production of atomic, molecular and mixed clusters from solid and gas, investigation of difference in the ionization mechanisms of clusters subjected to high intensity laser pulses. Carbon cluster sources based on sputtering and laser ablation are developed to generate a beam of clusters. The formation of carbon clusters in the sooting environment is confirmed using optical emission spectroscopy. Clusters heavier than dimer are detected by a linear time-of-flight (ToF) mass spectrometer. Neutral clusters are generated by a pulsed nozzle source. Clusters are ionized by IR and UV laser pulses of a nanosecond Nd: YAG laser. Xenon clusters, Ethyl alcohol clusters and mixed clusters of Ethyl alcohol, Water vapor and Benzene are generated using pulsed nozzle source. Apart from the development of cluster sources, the difference in the ionization mechanism of Xenon clusters under IR and UV irradiation is studied. The difference in the ionization mechanism provides a tool to study the effect of cluster size on the ionization processes in MultiPhoton Ionizion of Xenon clusters

Book Description
To the eyes of a chemist, carbon is certainly one of the most fascinating elements of the periodic table. Basically, the electronic structure and atomic size of carbon enables this element to form a variety of bonds with other elements and, most importantly, with other carbon atoms as weIl. These unique features lead to the amazingly complicated molecular structures we encounter e. g. in life sciences and organic chemistry. Of course, the technical importance of carbon is enormou- but I don't want to carry too many coals to Newcastle. Prom the viewpoint of an astrophysicist or chemist, the significance of carbon lies in the fact that it is the most abundant condensable element in space. Born in the interior of stars, and from there expelled into the interstellar medium, it initiates the formation of simple and complex molecules and of nanoscopic grains. These in turn form huge clouds in space - the birthplace of new stars and planetary systems. The decisive role of carbon in interstellar chemistry is widely accepted and the search for more and more families of interstellar carbon-bearing molecules is a topic of ongoing research. The interdisciplinary aspect of carbon also concerns its various solid forms, in which C and the other closed-cage fullerenes are certainly some of the most popular 60 newcomers.

Infrared Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy of Hydrocarbon Ions and Clusters in Fast Ion Beams

Infrared Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy of Hydrocarbon Ions and Clusters in Fast Ion Beams PDF Author:

Pages : 6

Book Description
The objectives of this effort were as follows: (1) extend the technical development of pulsed infrared (IR) cavity ringdown spectroscopy to longer wavelengths and higher spectral resolution; (2) develop its capacity as a general tool for trace gas analysis; and (3) study spectra, structures, hydrogen tunneling dynamics of hydrocarbon ions and complexes of relevance to ion-enhanced combustion processes. High-resolution, pulsed infrared cavity ringdown laser spectroscopy was developed and implemented for the study of carbon clusters and hydrocarbon ions. Several supersonic molecular beam sources of ions and hydrocarbons were constructed and tested by infrared cavity ringdown spectroscopy. The Stokes downconversion of pulsed visible laser radiation into the mid-infrared was explored in solid and liquid hydrogen media in an effort to explore more powerful and convenient infrared sources. Cavity ringdown studies of several different carbon/hydrocarbon systems were carried out. Nine related publications and three conference presentations are listed.
