La diffusion de l'informatique en tant que support quotidien de nos activités, n'a pas épargné l'exercice libéral de la médecine générale. Parallèlement au confort de travail et aux améliorations en matière de gain de temps et de diminution du risque d'erreur; l'informatique appliquée à ce secteur, soulève un certain nombre de questions. Celle qui nous est parue essentielle, concerne la confidentialité des données médicales informatiques qui sont générées, traitées, copiées et sauvegardées par le médecin généraliste. Afin de mieux comprendre les pratiques en la matière, nous avons adressé aux médecins généralistes (au total, 2380) un questionnaire comportant plusieurs volets dont on citera les données démographiques, la sécurité réseau, la gestion des mots de passe et des sessions de travail, la gestion des sauvegardes, les opérations de maintenance ainsi que l'utilisation de logiciels de protection (firewall/antivirus). En l'absence de références clairement établies, nous avons choisi les recommandations de la Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés pour diriger notre questionnaire. Il ressort de cette étude que, d'une part, les médecins généralistes ayant répondu (n=165) ne font pas moins bien que leurs homologues étrangers en matière de sécurité informatique, d'autre part, que même s'ils ont des efforts à accomplir pour atteindre le niveau de sécurité requis pour ce genres de données, les acteurs du secteur des technologies de l'information ont probablement un rôle important à jouer, à travers la mise en place de solutions "clés en main", adaptées à la nature de leur activité, et leur permettant de se focaliser sur leur métier de médecin généraliste.
