Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2020 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Management Styles, , language: English, abstract: This study aimed to assess the influence and contribution of leadership attributes of the head of Tanzania secondary schools on the students’ academic performance, with particular focus on schools in Mbulu District in the Manyara Region. The study identified four specific objectives, namely, to assess the influence and contribution of integrity, inspiration, competencies on students’ academic performance and to specify criteria for appointment of head of schools. The study employed an explanatory and cross-sectional design in collecting quantitative data using questionnaires administered on selected school teachers and secondary data was collected from a review of pertinent documents and from the internet. The findings indicate that there is a significant relationship between the leadership attributes of heads of school and students’ academic performance. Hence, the study concluded that the integrity, competency and inspirational outlooks of heads of schools influence students’ academic performances.

Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, , course: Leadership and Governance, language: English, abstract: This study assesses the influence of the leadership attributes of the head of school on the students’ academic performance in public and private secondary schools. An explanatory cross-sectional survey design with a concurrent mixed approach using both primary and secondary data was employed. A total of 202 teachers provided evidence on their heads of school’s attributes in influencing students’ academic performance using questionnaires, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The collected data was analysed using SPSS version 23 for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data. A significant relationship between integrity and the students’ academic performance was revealed. However, inspirational attributes negatively correlated between students’ academic performance. In addition, the results reveal that there was weak, positive and significant relationship between competency and academic performance. The study concluded that integrity and competency attributes significantly influence the students’ academic performance, while inspiration negatively influences students’ academic performance. Therefore, the study recommends the government to allocate enough funds to the professional development of the aspirant and to review the educational policy on the training and development of teachers before and after their appointment into a leadership position.

While considerable evidence indicates that school leaders are able to make important contributions to the success of their students, much less is known about how such contributions are made. This book provides a comprehensive account of research aimed at filling this gap in our knowledge, along with guidelines about how school leaders might use this knowledge for their own school improvement work.
