The primary purpose of fitness and body composition standards in the U.S. Armed Forces has always been to select individuals best suited to the physical demands of military service, based on the assumption that proper body weight and composition supports good health, physical fitness, and appropriate military appearance. The current epidemic of overweight and obesity in the United States affects the military services. The pool of available recruits is reduced because of failure to meet body composition standards for entry into the services and a high percentage of individuals exceeding military weight-for-height standards at the time of entry into the service leave the military before completing their term of enlistment. To aid in developing strategies for prevention and remediation of overweight in military personnel, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command requested the Committee on Military Nutrition Research to review the scientific evidence for: factors that influence body weight, optimal components of a weight loss and weight maintenance program, and the role of gender, age, and ethnicity in weight management.

The effects of feeding high protein diets (357.) from either casein, soyprotein or gluten sources on body composition of rats were investigated. Twenty three male Sprague-Dawely rats with mean body weight of 213 + 4.92g were divided into three groups. The first group {eight rats) was fed a diet containing 35% casein, the second group (seven rats) was fed a diet containing 357. soyprotein and the third group (eight rats) was fed a diet containing 35% gluten. The diets were fed ad-libitum for seven weeks. At the end of the experimental period, the rats were sacrified. Carcasses were analyzed for total body protein, fat and water content. Individual fat pads were dissected out and weighed from epididymal, perireneal and omental fat depots. An aliquot from the right epididymal fat pad was used to measure adipocyte size and number. Feces were collected for 72 hours and fecal protein and were measured. Results showed that percentage body fat was significantly higher in the casein than the soyprotein fed group. The weight of total dissectible fat depots (TDF) of the casein fed rats was significantly higher than the TDF of the soyprotein fed group. Adipocyte size but not adipocyte number was significantly larger in the casein fed rats as compared to ei ther soyprotei n or gluten fed rats. Carcass analysis for total body water and total body protein indicated that there was no significant differences in percentage total body protein and total body water among the three groups of rats. Serum insulin levels were significantly,higher in the casein fed rats as compared to the soyprotein or gluten fed groups. Fecal fat was significantly lower in the casein fed rats than either soyprotein or gluten fed rats. The results suggested that feeding casein leads to higher deposition of body fat, and increase fat cell size than feeding either soyprotein or gluten. This increase in adiposity could be due to the higher levels of insulin and fat absorption observed in the casein fed rats as compared to the other two groups of rats fed soyprotein or gluten.
