Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) describes a set of conditions in which the intestines become inflamed. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are the two main types of IBD. The symptoms range from mild to severe and depend on the part of the intestinal tract involved. Abdominal cramps, diarrhea, iron deficiency anemia, weight loss, etc. are some common symptoms. In diagnosing IBD, it is imperative to first develop a differential diagnosis. Several conditions exhibit symptoms similar to Crohn's disease or colitis, such as irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal tuberculosis, Behçet's disease, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug enteropathy, etc. No specific disease marker is yet known which enables a clear distinction between Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
