Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of the Infinitesimal Calculus The order in which the subject is developed, though differ ing from that of many text-books, is believed to be well caleu lated to meet the difficulties and secure the interest of the student. In the present edition many changes and some additions have been made which it is hoped will bring the book into accord with present-day treatment and needs. To supplement the ordinary Mathematical Tables I have added short tables which are intended to facilitate curve tracing as well as the rapid calculation of integrals, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Infinitesimal Calculus The present treatise, as its title points out, has been based on the principles of the infinitesimal method. I think that this method, besides being the simplest of all for teaching Calculus, as all admit, is also the most consistent and philoso phical. Some modern writers, indeed, have tried to discredit it but, when we examine their reason ings, we soon discover that they have done so be cause they have failed to grasp the true nature of infinitesimal quantities. This I have endeavored to show in my introduction to this work, where the reader will find not only what I believe to be the exact notion of the infinitesimal, but also a hint at the grounds (elsewhere developed) upon which the infinitesimal method rests its claim to be pre ferred to its fashionable rival, the method of limits. Book Description
Excerpt from A First Course in Infinitesimal Calculus For learners who can afford but a minimum of time for this study the essential articles of a short course are indicated after the table of contents. The exposition given here Is, In the main, a result of my experience in teaching the calculus to a large number of pupils. Accordingly, it is my duty to acknowledge my indebtedness to many students whose difficulties and original opinions have interested and stimulated me. In preparing the text many works and articles have been consulted. I feel myself to be especially indebted to the writers to whom references are made in various places in the book. An Introduction to the Infinitesimal Calculus

An Introduction to the Infinitesimal Calculus PDF Author: H. S. Carslaw

Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Infinitesimal Calculus: Notes for the Use of Science and Engineering Students The principal change 111 this edition will be found in the treatment of the exponential and logarithm. Six years ago few students began the study of the Calculus without having already completed a course in Algebra, including the Theory of Infinite Series. It is now realised that in making this demand the mathematical teacher was asking more than was necessary. The principles underlying the Calculus, in so far as they can be examined in such a course as this, offer little difficulty. N 0 more than an elementary knowledge of Algebra and Trigonometry is required for their discussion; and a real grasp of the meaning of differentiation and integration can be obtained by very many to whom the subject of Infinite Series would appear extremely obscure. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of the Infinitesimal Calculus: With Numerous Examples and Applications to Analysis In the preparation of the following treatise, the attempt has been made to remove all grounds for that feeling Of uncertainty which often possesses the student at the very outset, and from which he rarely finds it possible afterward to extricate himself. With this end in view, considerable space has been devoted to an exposition of the doctrine Of limits, which has been made the basis of both the Differ ential and the Integral Calculus. Infinitesimal Calculus Section

Infinitesimal Calculus Section PDF Author: F. S. Carey
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330283615
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 165

Book Description
Excerpt from Infinitesimal Calculus Section This book is divided into two sections: the first deals with those parts of the Infinitesimal Calculus which have been recently introduced into the syllabus of some examinations for higher school certificates, while the two sections taken together correspond fairly closely to the curriculum of students reading for the first part of an honours course in mathematics or for the ordinary degree in arts, science or engineering. Believing that there is no royal road which leads smoothly and directly to the Infinitesimal Calculus, the author has made no attempt to evade all the difficulties which at the outset face the student in this subject. The road has, however, been laid in the first section so as to pass through those domains of number and function with which the student is probably already acquainted, while the functions which are likely to be unfamiliar to him have been reserved for the second section. To assist the student in mastering the fundamental conception of a differential coefficient, two ideas which are usually reserved for books of a more advanced character have been introduced at the beginning and used throughout the book, namely, range and sequence, and the ordinary symbolism in connection with them has been varied. The symbols to express open and closed ranges have, however, been changed so slightly that the alteration amounts to little more than a typographical modification ; but a more important change has been made in the arrow notation, which is now so generally used to express the limits of a sequence. The author is indebted to his former colleague, Dr. James Mercer, for the beautiful suggestion of the arrow with a single barb, either upper or lower. This notation has been successfully tested in class work, but has not previously appeared in print. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
