Book Description

Author: Christine Harris- Van Keuren
Publisher: Inter-American Development Bank
ISBN:
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 138
Book Description
This report details a comparative analysis of early learning guidelines (ELGs) for infants and toddlers less than 3 years of age in Latin America and the Caribbean. The 19 ELGs evaluated are utilized by 12 national and 7 regional programs located in 13 countries in the region. Three types of programs are included in this report: parenting programs (n=3), community centers (n=4) and child development centers (n=12). Two of the twelve child development center programs fall beyond the age range of this research (0-3 years) and are included as case studies. While parenting programs are included in this analysis, caution should be given to directly comparing their results to the results from community center or child development center programs. As described in the paper, parenting programs represent a distinct type of intervention.

Children on the Threshold in Contemporary Latin American Cinema
Author: Rachel Randall
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 1498555144
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 285
Book Description
Children on the Threshold in Contemporary Latin American Cinema: Nature, Gender, and Agency analyzes child and adolescent protagonists in Latin American cinema. This book contends that child characters have taken on a critical representational role within Latin American cinema because of their position on the threshold between “nature” and “culture,” which converts them into a focus of, and a limit to, state or colonial biopower. Rachel Randall provides a comprehensive examination of the key themes and developments in boys’ and girls’ cinematic representations since the adoption of children’s rights discourses in the region. Recommended for scholars interested in Latin American studies, film studies, and cultural studies.

Teen Life in Latin America and the Caribbean
Author: Cynthia Tompkins
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313062870
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 342
Book Description
Teens in Latin America and the Caribbean generally face a difficult path to adulthood. Poverty and unemployment, violence, political instability, and emigration are frequently the norm in their native countries. Those from poorer families must often work as well as attend school, and opportunities for higher education and good jobs are limited. Wealthier teens, on the other hand, are sheltered from harshness and enjoy private schools, vacations abroad, and access to American consumer products. Yet family is important no matter what the class, and most of these teens share a love of parties, music, and current fashions. Latin America and the Caribbean are important regions to the United States, since large numbers of Americans can trace their roots there. Teen Life in Latin America and the Caribbean allows U.S. teens to understand the unique challenges and opportunities of teens in 15 Latin American or Caribbean countries. Photos complement the text.

Young Children in the World and Their Rights
Author: Adrijana Višnjić-Jevtić
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030682412
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 271
Book Description
This book provides different perspectives on the concept of children’s rights, including policy, educational, and children’s perspectives. It examines how the crucial ideas of the Convention on the Rights of the Child are respected and implemented in 14 countries in five regions of the world. It looks at early childhood education, children’s participatory rights, and at how these rights are promoted and guaranteed in different countries. It explores the professional practice of education and its complexities, challenges and dilemmas, as well as the role of play, and of listening and participation. The book advocates children’s rights today, arguing for its vital importance, in the best interests of the children. In doing so, it furthers the understanding of children’s rights and spreads knowledge about the Convention, as a means of celebrating its 30th anniversary. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) comprises the potential to change the lives of children to the very best. It may exalt children from the position of marginalized citizens to the centre of policies all over the world. Even though the concept of children’s rights is omnipresent, the respect for children’s rights must be discussed. While the Convention brings the new perspective of children as citizens to the world, there are still challenges in its application. The book interrogates challenges in understanding and applying children rights and offers possible answers to these challenges. The ratification process itself, does not guarantee that children’s rights are respected. While all adults should take responsibility for implementing the UNCRC in everyday life, Early Childhood Education should give opportunities for children to learn and live their rights.

Educational Internationalisation
Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9463003347
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
This book is part of the Sense Publishers series emerging from the 2013 WCCES XV World Congress in Buenos Aires (Series Editors Suzanne Majhanovich and Allan Pitman). The Congress Theme of New Times, New Voices provided the broad frame for the conference and the series of volumes, including this one, which contains research contributions focusing on educational internationalisation. Ever since the early days of international and comparative inquiry in education, the idea that policy and practice might be borrowed or transferred from one location to another has been a continuing theme. Several studies included in this volume focus on the activities of governments, the interactions between supranational organisations and states and the role of private and civil society actors in educational internationalisation. The chapters in this volume explore how internationalisation is carried out in various educational levels and through new or expanding policies and practices. Moreover, the chapters represent diverse research perspectives and geographical regions. More specifically, they examine issues pertaining to: (1) changes in the academic profession, (2) responses to the European Bologna Process and European perspectives on internationalisation, (3) political and institutional interventions that shape educational policy agendas, (4) children’s rights and teacher education in Latin America, and (5) the voices of Roma interest groups. Taken together, these chapters explore the relationships between academic voices and those of international organisations, as well as how national policy makers interpret contrasting international discourses, and political and social factors that influence educational internationalisation processes.
