Biological Treatment of Industrial Wastewater

Biological Treatment of Industrial Wastewater PDF Author: Maulin P Shah
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 1839165405
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
Many industrial processes use water as a solvent and therefore produce wastewater containing chemicals from that process. The amounts of these chemicals and the types will vary hugely depending on the industry and the processes running and may include things that are hazardous to health or the environment. This makes the treatment of industrial wastewater both extremely important and highly complex. One route for industrial wastewater treatment is the use of bioreactors. Biological Treatment of Industrial Wastewater presents a comprehensive overview of the latest advances and trends in the use of bioreactors for treating industrial wastewater. Several different types of bioreactor and their applications are discussed, alongside trends and considerations important in designing bioreactors. Bringing together a wealth of different approaches and voices this book will be a useful resource for anyone working in water treatment or looking at how industrial processes can be made more environmentally friendly.

Combined Application of Physico-Chemical & Microbiological Processes for Industrial Effluent Treatment Plant

Combined Application of Physico-Chemical & Microbiological Processes for Industrial Effluent Treatment Plant PDF Author: Maulin Shah
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811504970
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 406

Book Description
In recent decades, scientific insight into the chemistry of water has increased enormously, leading to the development of advanced wastewater and water purification technologies. However, the quality of freshwater resources has continually deteriorated worldwide, both in industrialized and developing countries. Although traditional wastewater technologies focus on the removal of suspended solids, nutrients and bacteria, hundreds of organic pollutants occur in wastewater and urban surface waters. These new pollutants are synthetic or naturally occurring chemicals that are not often monitored in the environment but have the potential to enter the environment and cause known or suspected adverse ecological and / or human health effects. Collectively referred to as the "emerging contaminants," they are mostly derived from domestic use and occur in trace concentrations ranging from pico to micrograms per liter. Environmental contaminants are resistant to conventional wastewater treatment processes and most of them remain unaffected, leading to the contamination of the receiving water. As such, there is a need for advanced wastewater treatment process that is capable of removing environmental contaminants to ensure safe fresh water supplies. This book explains the biological and chemical wastewater treatment technologies. The biological wastewater treatment processes presented include: (1) bioremediation of wastewater such as aerobic and anaerobic treatment; (2) phytoremediation of wastewater using engineered wetlands, rhizofiltration, rhizodegradation, phytodegradation, phytoaccumulation, phytotransformation and hyperaccumulators; and (3) mycoremediation of wastewater. The chemical wastewater treatment processes discussed include chemical precipitation, ion exchange, neutralization, adsorption and disinfection. In addition, the book describes wastewater treatment plants in terms of plant size, layout and design as well as installation location. Also presenting the latest, innovative effluent water treatment processes, it is a valuable resource for biochemical and wastewater treatment engineers, environmental scientists and environmental microbiologists.

Bioremediation of Industrial Waste for Environmental Safety

Bioremediation of Industrial Waste for Environmental Safety PDF Author: Gaurav Saxena
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811318913
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 447

Book Description
Achieving environmental sustainability with rapid industrialization is a major challenge of current scenario worldwide. As globally evident, industries are the key economic drivers, but are also the major polluters as untreated/partially treated effluents discharged from the industries is usually thrown into the aquatic resources and also dumped unattended. Industrial effluents are considered as the major sources of environmental pollution as these contains highly toxic and hazardous pollutants, which reaches far off areas due to the medium of dispersion and thus, create ecological nuisance and health hazards in living beings. Hence, there is an urgent to find ecofriendly solution to deal with industrial waste, and develop sustainable methods for treating/detoxifying wastewater before its release into the environment. Being a low cost and eco-friendly clean technology, bioremediation can be a sustainable alternative to conventional remediation technologies for treatment and management of industrial wastes to protect public health and environment. Therefore, this book (Volume I) covers the bioremediation of different industrial wastes viz. tannery wastewater, pulp and paper mill wastewater, distillery wastewater, acid mine tailing wastes, and many more; which are lacking in a comprehensive manner in previous literature at one place. A separate chapter dedicated to major industries and type of waste produced by them is also included. This book will appeal to students, researchers, scientists, industry persons and professionals in field of microbiology, biotechnology, environmental sciences, eco-toxicology, environmental remediation and waste management and other relevant areas, who aspire to work on the biodegradation and bioremediation of industrial wastes for environmental safety.

The Role of Phytoremediation in Remediation of Industrial Waste

The Role of Phytoremediation in Remediation of Industrial Waste PDF Author: Yunusa Adamu Ugya
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783668351240
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 36

Book Description
Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, language: English, abstract: This text summarizes the role of phytoremediation in the remediation of industrial waste water since this waste water has become a threat to water quality. Several technologies are available to remediate water that is contaminated by industrial pollutant. However, many of these technologies are costly (e.g. excavation of contaminated material and chemical/physical treatment) or do not achieve a long-term nor aesthetic solution. Phytoremediation can provide a cost-effective, long-lasting and aesthetic solution for remediation of contaminated sites. In many cases, especially in tropical or subtropical areas, invasive plants such as the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and water lettuce (P. stratiotes L.) are used in these phytoremediation water systems. This is because, compared to native plants, these invasive plants show a much higher nutrient removal efficiency with their high nutrient uptake capacity, fast growth rate, and big biomass production. In the active growth season, for instance, water hyacinth plants can double in number and biomass in 6 to 15 days. This study shows the importance of phytoremediation in the phytoremediation of industrial waste.

Application of Phytotechnologies for Cleanup of Industrial, Agricultural and Wastewater Contamination

Application of Phytotechnologies for Cleanup of Industrial, Agricultural and Wastewater Contamination PDF Author: Peter A. Kulakow
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048135915
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 206

Book Description
As government and community leaders, private companies, citizens, and applied scientists search for low-cost methods to cleanup environmental pollution, phytotechnologies can contribute to the solution by utilizing natural processes to reduce environmental risk. Phytotechnologies use vegetation to manage environmental contaminants in soil, surface water, and groundwater based on site-specific design considerations that can save 50 to 75 percent of the capital and operating costs compared to conventional remediation and containment technologies. Successful phytotechnology applications are based on scientific knowledge of plant physiology, chemical contaminants, climate, and soil conditions. This book presents current research findings that address soil and water contamination with obsolete pesticides, radionuclides and other inorganic and organic contaminants. This book documents international sharing of information by scientists and stakeholders seeking to use the best available information: to disseminate existing knowledge on phytotechnologies and exchange experience of field-scale applications for cleanup of industrial, agricultural, and wastewater contamination, to assess existing knowledge and identify research needs and directions for future work especially in regard to environmental management in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and to promote collaboration between different countries in preparing applications for environmental remediation and restoration.
