This revised index includes a completely re-written chapter covering the Martinez-Cardeza line (no. 76-A), which chapter is an addendum to v. 1. The chapter was completely re-written when it became apparent that "errata and addenda" would not be adequate. A summary follows: Juan Martinez-Cardeza (1763-1832), a Spaniard sent to the United States in 1805 on a special mission for the King of Spain, filed for citizenship in 1811 and became a citizen in 1817. He left a wife and two daughters in Spain, and his wife died shortly after his arrival. He and Margaret Sproul (1802-1884) had four children in Philadelphia, and after his death, these children used the surname of Martinez Cardeza. The first son, John Thomas Martinez Cardeza (1820-1900), married Isabella Hammond about 1845. Isabella Sproule, a niece of Isabella Hammond, assumed the Cardeza name in honor of her aunt. Insofar as can be determined, there was no direct relationship between Margaret Sproul and Isabella Sproule (who became Bella Cardeza Sproule, and married Frederick Charles Stevens, one of the ancestors of the author).
