Book Description
Ann B grew up in seeming luxury and privilege. To the outside world, she lived an idyllic life, but at age five, when the family moved to Beverly Hills, her world becomes anything but perfect. Her father and the family butler began to sexually abuse her. Detachment, or mentally separating herself from the shame, emotional turmoil, and abuse, becomes Ann's means of survival. Over time, she becomes so successful at detaching; she fully suppresses the horrific memories. But in her mid-twenties, Ann begins experiencing abhorrent images of herself as a child being subjected to the abuse. Where are these images coming from? Is she making them up? Is something wrong with her? Could they possibly be real? What kind of person could she be to make up these stories about her father, a respected member of their community? Ann is nearly crazy with doubt, self-recrimination, and the horror that what she is experiencing may have a basis in fact. At about the same time the flashbacks begin, Ann starts down a path of spiritual exploration. Raised as an Orthodox Jew, the mere mention of Jesus Christ unnerved her. And yet her journey ultimately leads to her belief in Jesus as the Messiah. In these pages, Ann describes her arduous forty-year path to healing. Ann struggles to accept the truth of her recovered memories as she fails at two marriages before finding her true-life partner in her third husband. And she suffers at the hands of incompetent, even harmful, psychologists before finding the therapeutic approach that ultimately helps her. At the heart of her story is the healing Ann B experiences through faith and her relationship with Jesus Christ.

Faith Born of Seduction

Faith Born of Seduction PDF Author: Jennifer L Manlowe
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 0814755291
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
How do survivors of sexual and domestic violence relate to religion and to a higher power? What are the social and religious contexts that sustain and encourage eating disorders in women? How do these issues intersect? The relationship between Christian religious discourse, incest, and eating disorders reveals an important, and so far unexamined, psychosocial phenomenon. Drawing from interviews with incest survivors whose sexual and religious backgrounds are intimately connected with their problematic relationship with food, Jennifer Manlowe here illuminates the connections between female body, weight, and appetite preoccupations. Manlowe offers social and psychological insights into the most common forms of female suffering—incest and body hatred. The volume is intended as a resource for professionals, advocates, friends of survivors, and most importantly, the survivor of incest herself as she attempts to understand the links of meaning in her mind between her incest experience and her subsequent eating disorder.

Healing the Ravaged Soul

Healing the Ravaged Soul PDF Author: Sue Magrath
Publisher: Lutterworth Press
ISBN: 0718845390
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 169

Book Description
Why does God hate me? How can I believe in a God who has allowed my suffering? These are just two of the difficult spiritual questions that survivors of child sexual abuse struggle with. In addition, survivors often have mixed feelings about thechurch because of perceived judgment and indifference, their own shame, or their discomfort with certain aspects of worship. Of the many after-effects of sexual abuse, spiritual wounds are the least talked about, yet they are central to adult survivors who seek to heal and find faith and meaning in their lives. With grace and gentleness, this book seeks to answer survivors' spiritual questions and address some of the common misconceptions that often develop when young victims attempt to understand what has happened to them. Healing the Ravaged Soul explores the origins of their spiritual issues with clear psychological insights and guides survivors on a spiritual journey toward healing, wholeness, and a deeper relationship with God.

Whispers from My Rocking Chair

Whispers from My Rocking Chair PDF Author: Marcia J. Terpstra
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1477269983
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 229

Book Description
This book is about the LIGHT in my life. This book is not my book. It belongs to HIM. After writing my first book, and His book too, "Splinters from my Rocking Chair" that depicts the very dark in my life as a result of incest, I knew I had to write about the LIGHT in my life; the LIGHT that saved me. I lived in so much darkness through so much of my life as a result of incest but also because of my religious upbringing. This upbringing promoted the casting out of so many and I bought into it. I believed in them, not HIM. I then decided I had to stop fighting mankind and trying to prove my worthiness to them. I went to the GOSPELS and there I found Jesus and that He was on my side, not theirs. He was against the so called religious. He was on my side, our side. He sought after the broken and the sick and all those who were so lost. He loved all those who had gone astray and the weak in spirit. He went after those who needed HIM. This book is about my walk with JESUS!

Healing the Whole

Healing the Whole PDF Author: Yvette M. Pennacchia
Publisher: Burns & Oates

Category : Medical

Pages : 232

Book Description
As more memories surfaced, more shame began to emerge.... By writing, I could put some distance between myself and my shame without stopping the process.... As I continued to heal and share my writing with other incest survivors, I was encouraged, supported, and validated by the notion that maybe my writing could help others. I had been keeping a detailed journal for several years and had no prior thoughts of ever publishing it or becoming a writer. Although there were some books on incest that described the process, I had not come across one that revealed those many intimate steps a survivor would need to take, such as walking through the feelings of shame convinced that you are going to die, or the terror of discovering one's sexual identity that is free from abuse. It was then I decided I would publish my journal and share my daily triumphs and agonies.
