Vote!

Vote! PDF Author: Coral Celeste Frazer
Publisher: Twenty-First Century Books ™
ISBN: 1541572351
Category : Young Adult Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 126

Book Description
August 18, 2020, marked the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, which prohibited states and the US government from denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of sex. See how the 70-year-long fight for women's suffrage was hard won by leaders such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, Carrie Chapman Catt and others. Learn how their success led into the civil rights and feminist movements of the mid- and late twentieth century, as well as today's #MeToo, #YesAllWomen, and Black Lives Matter movements. In the face of voter ID laws, voter purges, gerrymandering, and other restrictions, Americans continue to fight for equality in voting rights.

The Street and the Ballot Box

The Street and the Ballot Box PDF Author: Lynette H. Ong
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1009193058
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
How do discontented masses and opposition elites work together to engineer a change in electoral authoritarian regimes? Social movements and elections are often seen as operating in different terrains – outside and inside institutions, respectively. In this Element, I develop a theory to describe how a broad-based social movement that champions a grievance shared by a wide segment of the population can build alliances across society and opposition elites that, despite the rules of the game rigged against them, vote the incumbents out of power. The broad-based nature of the movement also contributes to the cohesion of the opposition alliance, and elite defection, which are often crucial for regime change. This Element examines the 2018 Malaysian election and a range of cases from other authoritarian regimes across Asia, Eastern Europe, and Africa to illustrate these arguments.

The Ballot, the Streets—or Both

The Ballot, the Streets—or Both PDF Author: August H. Nimtz
Publisher: Haymarket Books
ISBN: 1642590916
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 492

Book Description
Nimtz uncovers in one that attempts to chart a course between plain opportunism and anarchist rejections of the electoral arena. Instead, electoral campaigns are seen as crucial for developing political education and organisation, and as a key way to measure your forces and communicate with the wider population. As radical left reformist projects, exemplified by Sanders and Corbyn, once again become a political force and the left has to think about what it means to run for office in a capitalist state, it's a good time to look back at how the left has historically conducted such debates.

Granddaddy's Turn

Granddaddy's Turn PDF Author: Michael S. Bandy
Publisher: Candlewick
ISBN: 0763665932
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 33

Book Description
Based on the true story of one family’s struggle for voting rights in the civil rights–era South, this moving tale shines an emotional spotlight on a dark facet of U.S. history. Life on the farm with Granddaddy is full of hard work, but despite all the chores, Granddaddy always makes time for play, especially fishing trips. Even when there isn’t a bite to catch, he reminds young Michael that it takes patience to get what’s coming to you. One morning, when Granddaddy heads into town in his fancy suit, Michael knows that something very special must be happening—and sure enough, everyone is lined up at the town hall! For the very first time, Granddaddy is allowed to vote, and he couldn’t be more proud. But can Michael be patient when it seems that justice just can’t come soon enough? This powerful and touching true-life story shares one boy’s perspective of growing up in the segregated South, while beautiful illustrations depict the rural setting in tender detail.

The American Ballot Box in the Mid-Nineteenth Century

The American Ballot Box in the Mid-Nineteenth Century PDF Author: Richard Franklin Bensel
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521537865
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
During the middle of the nineteenth century, Americans voted in saloons in the most derelict sections of great cities, in hamlets swarming with Union soldiers, or in wooden cabins so isolated that even neighbors had difficulty finding them. Their votes have come down to us as election returns reporting tens of millions of officially sanctioned democratic acts. Neatly arrayed in columns by office, candidate, and party, these returns are routinely interpreted as reflections of the preferences of individual voters and thus seem to unambiguously document the existence of a robust democratic ethos. By carefully examining political activity in and around the polling place, this book suggests some important caveats which must attend this conclusion. These caveats, in turn, help to bridge the interpretive chasm now separating ethno-cultural descriptions of popular politics from political economic analyses of state and national policy-making.

Remember the Ladies

Remember the Ladies PDF Author: Angela P. Dodson
Publisher: Center Street
ISBN: 9781455570942
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
One of the best women's suffrage books, Remember the Ladies releases in paperback for the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment with unforgettable stories of the courageous leaders who secured women's right to vote. When the Second Continental Congress of the thirteen colonies convened to draft the Declaration of Independence, Abigail Adams admonished her husband, John Adams, to "remember the ladies" to no avail. From the birth of our nation to the crushing defeat of the first female presidential nominee for a major party, this popular history highlights women's impact on United States politics and government. Drawing on original source documents, including biographies of leaders,first-hand letters, beautiful black and white photos, historical cartoons, charts and graphs, as well as posters, ads, and buttons, Remember the Ladies presents this often-forgotten struggle-and its roots in other justice work-in an accessible, conversational, relevant manner for a wide audience. Here are the groundbreaking convention records, speeches, newspaper accounts, letters, photos, and drawings of those who fought for women's right to vote, arranged to convey the inherent historical drama. The accessible almanac style lets our compelling history speak for itself. From an award-winning author and former New York Times editor, Remember the Ladies does not extract women's suffrage from the inseparable concurrent historic endeavors for emancipation, immigration, and temperance. Instead, its robust research documents the intersectionality of women's struggle for the vote in its true context with other progressive efforts.

The Bullet and the Ballot Box

The Bullet and the Ballot Box PDF Author: Aditya Adhikari
Publisher: Verso Books
ISBN: 1781685649
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
The Bullet and the Ballot Box offers a rich and sweeping account of a decade of revolutionary upheaval. When Nepal’s Maoists launched their armed rebellion in the nineties, they had limited public support and many argued that their ideology was obsolete. Twelve years later they were in power, and their ambitious plan of social transformation dominated the national agenda. How did this become possible? Adhikari’s narrative draws on a broad range of sources – including novels, letters and diaries – to illuminate the history and human drama of the Maoist revolution. An indispensible account of Nepal’s recent history, the book offers a fascinating case study of how communist ideology has been reinterpreted and translated into political action in the twenty-first century.
