This opening volume - the only one written by Sir Walter Raleigh before his death - covers the early days of the RFC and RNAS and the first months of the war. This official history of the part played in the Great War by the Royal Air Force is based chiefly on the records of the Air Ministry, collected and preserved by the historical section, supplemented by the contributions of many military and naval officers and civilian experts, as well as accounts of eyewitnesses. In all there are six volumes of text and maps plus a supporting volume of appendices, published between 1922 and 1937. The author of this first volume, Sir Walter Raleigh, died after finishing it and the task was taken over by H.A Jones who completed it. Volume One describes the beginnings of the Air Force and the institution of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). It covers the early months of the war (Mons to Ypres 1914) and the activities of Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in 1914. It concludes with an account of the expansion of the RFC and RNAS during the war - fighters, bombers and aircraft carriers among other developments - and discusses the interplay between the two. This study argues that the RAF did not actually gain full independence and autonomy on the day; rather it had to endure many years of struggle brought on by both inter-service rivalries and a recessed British economy. Following the armistice, the RAF was without a defined peace-time role, and therefore faced the possibility of having its funding cut-off. Only after Lord Hugh Trenchard took charge of the fledgling air service and had the foresight to make many of the crucial decisions was the RAF provided with a means of survival. In forming the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918, Britain created the world’s first independent air service. Britain entered the First World War with less than 200 ill-assorted flying machines divided between the army and the navy, but by the end of the war the RAF mustered almost 300,000 personnel and 22, 000 aircraft. Originally published in 1986, more than 65 years after the event, the decision to form the RAF remained poorly understood and Malcolm Cooper presented the first detailed modern analysis of its creation, shedding new light on the process by which Britain entered the air age. Back in the late 1930s it was a common practice for the Government of England to call up young men into the Armed Services. After the war with Germany ended (1945) this practice continued so that England would have ready trained Armed Forces in case war with any other country should be declared. North Korea was a good example. I decided to beat the call up and instead volunteer so that I could be in the service that I desired. For the average service person, the Royal Air Force was a force that did not put the person in an area where gunfire ruled. I did not want to be involved in the exchange of gunfire with anyone. Electronics was my liking and although many over the air two way discussions did take place, it was always in firm, sensible, good language. That was the way that I was brought up and that was the way that I stayed. The book is about my life and the way that I reacted when mixed with other youth from around England. I have long had the belief that I was chosen and helped to become what I am. The book is about my experiences and how my helper kept me on track, even when serving in a foreign country.
