This House Is Not For Sale

This House Is Not For Sale PDF Author: E.C. Osondu
Publisher: Harper Collins
ISBN: 0062097784
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 119

Book Description
“The timelessness of this ambitious debut reminds the reader of J. M. Coetzee’s Life & Times of Michael K.”—Yiyun Li, author of The Vagrants A powerful tale of family and community, This House Is Not for Sale brings to life an African neighborhood and one remarkable house, seen through the eyes of a young member of the household. It lies in a town seemingly lost in time, full of colorful, larger-than-life characters. At the narrative’s heart are Grandpa, the family patriarch, whose occasional cruelty is balanced by his willingness to open his doors to those in need, and the house itself, which becomes a character in its own right and takes on the scale of legend. From the decades-long rivalry between the owners of two competing convenience stores to the man who persuades his neighbors to give up their earthly possessions to prepare for the end of the world, E. C. Osondu’s story captures a place beyond the reach of the outside world, full of superstitions and myths that sustain its people. His prose has the lightness and magic of fable, but his themes—poverty, disease, the arrival of civilization in an isolated community—are timeless and profound. “Remarkable. . . . a distinctive and singular achievement.”—Jeffery Renard Allen, author of Song of the Shank “Marvelous.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 32

Book Description
A picture book about the special relationship between a boy and his grandfather, who stay close even when they are separated by distance. Grandpa, did you know that if you rub a needle with a magnet, one end will point to the north and the other end to the south? In the south there's an apartment building 160 metres tall. From the balcony, you can see the entire city. There are cinemas and ice cream shops ... and me! As Henry measures the distance between his new apartment and Grandpa's wooden house under the mango tree, Grandpa works out how close they really are. A moving story that celebrates the bond between a boy and his grandfather.

Critical Steps

Critical Steps PDF Author: Tony Muschara
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000476812
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 195

Book Description
Critical Steps happen every day at work and at home, purposefully. Work does not happen otherwise. If an operation has the capacity to do work, then it has the capacity to do harm. Work is energy directed by human beings to create value. But people are imperfect—we make mistakes, and sometimes we lose control of the work. Therefore, work is the use of force under conditions of uncertainty. A Critical Step is a human action that will trigger immediate, irreversible, and intolerable harm to an asset, if that action or a preceding action is performed improperly. Whether the human action involves clicking on a link attached to an e-mail message, walking down a flight of stairs with a newborn baby in arms, engaging the clutch on a gasoline-driven chain saw, or administering a medication to a patient in a hospital, these all satisfy the definition of what constitutes critical risks in our daily lives, professionally or personally. The overarching goal of managing Critical Steps is to maximize the success (safety, reliability, productivity, quality, profitability, etc.) of people’s performance in the workplace, to create value for the organization without losing control of built-in hazards necessary to create that value.
