Book Description
Excerpt from In Bamboo Lands The Empire of Japan has long been an object of interest to he Western world. A generous destiny enabled me to visitt those attractive islands and to gain an insight not only into the delightful customs of the great common people, but into the arts and the industries, and into the beautiful and touching worship of ancestors as well. In the following simple and impartial recital of what I saw and did in the course of a pleasurable tour, I have endeavored not to increase the bulk of the volume by extraneous digression or by my own reflections. Those who are interested in Japanese art will find brief descriptions of the manufacture of pottery, damascene, cloisonne, and lacquer. The illustrations are reproductions of pictures gathered during my travels. I desire to acknowledge my indebtedness to Dr. J. J. Rein, to the columns of The Japan Mail, and for invaluable assistance derived from the works of the distinguished author, Mr. B. H. Chamberlain, of T ky . Bamboos

Bamboos PDF Author: Beverly Thomas Galloway
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780282806224
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 66

Book Description
Excerpt from Bamboos: Their Culture and Uses in the United States Ilong before the department inaugurated its systematic work on agricultural explorations, bamboos were being brought into the country in various ways. These unusual and often strikingly beauti ful plants naturally attracted the attention of travelers, who found they could be lifted in clumps and kept alive for several weeks. Isolated plantings were thus early established along our southern seacoasts, and some of these have developed in a very striking manner. An interesting case in point is the grove on the Ogeechee Road, 14: miles south of Savannah, Ga. This grove is now more than 30 years old, covers an area of something over an acre, and many of the plants are 50 to 60 feet in height. Mr. Lathrop's continued interest in the bamboo is shown by the fact that when this remarkable planting of oriental bamboos was called to his attention he purchased it, together with 40 acres of surrounding land, and deeded the property to the Government for plant-introduction work. The Book of the Damned

The Book of the Damned PDF Author: Charles Fort
Publisher: Library of Alexandria
ISBN: 1613106424
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
"Time travel, UFOs, mysterious planets, stigmata, rock-throwing poltergeists, huge footprints, bizarre rains of fish and frogs-nearly a century after Charles Fort's Book of the Damned was originally published, the strange phenomenon presented in this book remains largely unexplained by modern science. Through painstaking research and a witty, sarcastic style, Fort captures the imagination while exposing the flaws of popular scientific explanations. Virtually all of his material was compiled and documented from reports published in reputable journals, newspapers and periodicals because he was an avid collector. Charles Fort was somewhat of a recluse who spent most of his spare time researching these strange events and collected these reports from publications sent to him from around the globe. This was the first of a series of books he created on unusual and unexplained events and to this day it remains the most popular. If you agree that truth is often stranger than fiction, then this book is for you"--Taken from Good Reads website.
