The goal of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of the Core Vocabulary approach (CVA; Dodd, Holm, Crosbie, & McIntosh, 2006) for improving speech intelligibility in an adult with DS by establishing consistent word production in order to enhance communicative competence and participation within a variety of social settings. Research indicates marked limitations in speech intelligibility in individuals with DS, including delayed and disordered articulation and inconsistent speech errors (i.e., variability in production of the same word) that continues throughout the individual’s life (Kent & Vorperian, 2013). This study evaluated the effectiveness of CVA on intelligibility by targeting reduction in variability in target word productions selected because they were functionally salient for the client. Data collection consisted of a slight adaptation to CVA, including both speech accuracy and variability measures to evaluate the effect of CVA. The following question was addressed: What are the effects of core vocabulary on the variability and accuracy of production of target words in an adult with DS? Results suggest that vowel accuracy is a relative strength in her system as compared to consonants, and two-syllable shaped words are her upper boundary. However, while accuracy measures demonstrated some slight improvement across intervention sessions, variability remained stable and did not show the same change over time. A variety of adaptations and possible future research topics are discussed.

Melodic intonation therapy (MIT) is a structured aphasia treatment program that uses the musical elements of language to improve expressive language and language production in individuals with Broca's aphasia. Aphasia is a neurogenic disorder caused by damage to the regions of the brain responsible for language, typically the left half of the brain. It is usually seen in individuals who have experienced strokes. Apraxia of speech (AOS), which often co-occurs with Broca's aphasia, is a speech disorder in which an individual has difficulty producing correct and consistent speech. This study aimed to evaluate MIT's effectiveness in improving speech intelligibility in individuals with AOS. Due to AOS being a key characteristic in Broca's aphasia, MIT may be considered a vital treatment technique for individuals with AOS. Two participants with post-stroke aphasia underwent one-hour treatment sessions for 20 days, in a multiple baseline single-subject design. The PI assessed increases in word length, hesitancy (difficulty initiating utterances), articulatory precision, and the number of syllables correctly produced after each session. Results showed that MIT improved articulatory precision, syllable production, and word length. No significant change was measured with hesitancy. Results suggest that MIT could be effective for improving speech intelligibility in individuals with AOS.

This investigation attempted to develop a test for assessing intelligibility of native Spanish-speakers with dysarthria. Twenty-five native Spanish-speakers participated in this study. Eleven were diagnosed with Parkinson2s disease and 14 subjects free of neurological disease served as a comparison group. Subjects read a list of Spanish minimal pair phonetic contrasts randomly presented. These phonetic contrasts were prepared by the investigator and have been considered to be sensitive to dysarthric impairment and contribute to speech intelligibility in English speakers with dysarthria. Responses were digitally recorded. A group of 25 native English speaking graduate students in speech-language pathology and 6 native Spanish speaking professionals served as judges in a perceptual task of intelligibility. Judges listened to the digitally recorded speech samples from the Parkinson2s and comparison groups. English speaking listeners recorded responses by transcribing phonetically what they heard. Spanish speaking listeners wrote their responses orthographically. Scores of intelligibility were awarded to each speaker based on the number of correct responses by each listener. The subjects with PD were found to be less intelligible than the comparison group by both the English and Spanish speaking judges. Acoustic analysis of VOT, vowel space, and F2 transitions for each speaker were examined. Significant differences were found between groups for VOT and vowel space. A trend was also exhibited between groups for F2 transitions although this was not found significant at the .05 level. Regression analysis revealed that VOT was a strong predictor of intelligibility, accounting for 57% of the variance.
