Improving Effectiveness and Outcomes for the Poor in Health, Nutrition, and Population
Author: World Bank
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 0821379518
Category : Health services accessibility
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
This study evaluates the effectiveness of the World Bank Group's support for health, nutrition, and population (HNP) in developing countries from 1997 to 2008 - totaling more than $17 billion - and distills lessons for greater impact in the future. It finds that the Bank Group now funds a smaller share of global support for HNP than a decade ago, but its support remains substantial and adds considerable value. About two-thirds of the Bank's HNP support has had satisfactory outcomes, often in difficult environments. But in a number of country settings, particularly in Africa, it has not performed well, in part due to high complexity and weak capacity. Only half of HNP support had a pro-poor focus, while support to reduce high fertility and promote family planning has dwindled. The evaluation highlights the contribution of investments in water supply, sanitation, and hygiene to improving the health of the poor and the lessons from support for sector-wide approaches, communicable disease control, and health reform. Moving forward, the World Bank needs to improve the performance of its HNP support and the Bank and IFC need to take actions to ensure their support reaches the poor and contributes greater social benefits, respectively.

African Futures
Author: Clemens Greiner
Publisher: Africa-Europe Group for Interd
ISBN: 9789004470811
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 412
Book Description
"The essays in this collection are written to make readers (re)consider what is possible in Africa. The essays shake the tree of received wisdom and received categories, and hone in on the complexities of life under ecological and economic constraints. Yet, throughout this volume, people do not emerge as victims, but rather as inventors, engineers, scientists, planners, writers, artists, and activists, or as children, mothers, fathers, friends, or lovers - all as future-makers. It is precisely through agents such as these that Africa is futuring: rethinking, living, confronting, imagining, and relating in the light of its many emerging tomorrows"--

Rolling Back Malaria
Author: World Bank
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 9780821361993
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 222
Book Description
There are more than 1.1 million deaths per year from malaria, mostly among children less than five years old. The disease is preventable and curable with available technologies, but , in the absence of strong and sustained malaria control efforts, coverage with effective interventions is low, particularly among the poor. Malaria impairs economic growth and human development in many of the World Bank's client countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Bank has the capacity to do a lot more than it has in malaria control, including financing, policy advice, and implementation support. It will support countries to develop and implement programs to (i) cost-effectively reduce morbidity, productivity losses in multiple sectors, and mortality due to malaria, particularly among the poor and among children and pregnant women; and (ii) address the challenges of regional and global public goods.
