Book Description
In order to minimize the impact of construction on the traveling public, MDOT utilizes innovative and specialized construction methods such as Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC). Michigan, like other highway agencies in the region, has several challenges in specifying prefabricated bridge elements and systems (PBES) and accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques for bridge replacement projects. Among those challenges, the following are the most common: (1) justification of initial project costs, (2) defining a rational process for selecting ABC over conventional construction, (3) absence of PBES selection guidelines and proven standard and successful designs, (4) absence of constructability evaluation guidelines, and (5) uncertain durability performance of PBES and connections. This research project was initiated with several objectives. They were achieved by (1) synthesizing the state-of-the-art practices, challenges, and lessons learned from the implemented ABC projects, (2) developing a Michigan-specific decision-making platform based on the site specific data to identify the optimal construction alternative between conventional construction and ABC, (3) developing a comprehensive list of connection details and cementitious materials for connections, (4) developing standard deck level longitudinal connection details for typical highway bridges, (5) developing a template of special provisions for grout selection and application procedures, (6) documenting construction procedures, equipment, and implementation limitations, (7) developing a constructability review checklist, and (6) providing recommendations for further research and implementation of PBES based on constructability, maintainability, repairability, and durability.

Standards for Single Span Prefabricated Bridges

Standards for Single Span Prefabricated Bridges PDF Author: Phil Rossbach
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Prefabricated bridges
Languages : en
Pages : 11

Book Description
'In coordination with a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) consisting of County Engineers and Iowa DOT representatives, the Iowa DOT has proposed to develop a set of standards for a single span prefabricated bridge system for use on the local road system. The purpose of the bridge system is to improve bridge construction, accelerate project delivery, improve worker safety, be cost effective, reduce impacts to the traveling public by reducing traffic disruptions and the duration of detours, and allow local forces to construct the bridges. HDR Inc. was selected by the Iowa DOT to perform the initial concept screening of the bridge system. This Final Report summarizes the initial conceptual effort to investigate potential systems, make recommendations for a preferred system and propose initial details to be tested in the laboratory in Phase 2 of the project. The prefabricated bridge components were to be based on the following preliminary criteria set forth by the TAC. The criteria were to be verified and/ or modified as part of the conceptual development. - 24' and 30' roadway widths - Skews of 0 degrees, 15 degrees , and 30 degrees - Span lengths of 30' -- 70' in 10' increments using precast concrete beams - Voided box beams could be considered - Limit precast element weight to 45,000 pounds for movement and placement of beams - Beams could be joined transversely with threaded rods - Abutment concepts may included precast as well as an option for cast-in-place abutments with pile foundations. In addition to the above criteria, there was an interest to use a single-width prefabricated bridge component to simplify fabrication as well as a desire to utilize non-prestressed concrete systems where possible to allow for precasting of the beam modules by local forces or local precast plants. The SL-1 modular steel bridge rail was identified for use with this single span prefabricated bridge system." -- Background

Precast concrete bridge continuity over piers

Precast concrete bridge continuity over piers PDF Author: FIB – International Federation for Structural Concrete
Publisher: FIB - International Federation for Structural Concrete
ISBN: 2883941394
Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 52

Book Description
Concrete bridges are an important part of today's road infrastructure. An important part of those concrete bridges is to a large extent prefabricated. Precast concrete enables all the advantages of an industrialized process to be fully utilized. Contemporary concrete mixtures are used to realize high-strength bridge girders and piers that exactly meet the requirements set, both structurally and aesthetically, with a small ecological footprint. Sustainable and durable! On the construction site, there is no need for complex formwork, the execution time is drastically reduced and where road, water and rail traffic on or under the bridge has to be temporarily interrupted, it is only minimally inconvenienced during the execution of the project. There is a wide variety of prefabricated bridges. In 2004, the fib commission on prefabrication already published the Bulletin 29 Precast concrete bridges which, in addition to the history of prefabricated bridges, also gave an overview of the different bridge types and structural systems. This document elaborates on one specific structural system: the continuous bridge. Task Group 6.5 "Precast concrete bridges" discusses in detail how to achieve continuity over the piers with precast elements. This bulletin bundles the experiences of experts in the field of bridge design so that less experienced designers would be able to identify the points of attention and make a correct design. In addition to the theoretical considerations, the principles are tested against three realizations in the USA and Europe. Commission 6 thanks the Co-Conveners Maher Tadros and Hugo Corres and all active members of the Task Group for sharing their knowledge and experience and for the successful realization of this bulletin.

Book Description
Prestressed concrete decks are commonly used for bridges with spans between 25m and 450m and provide economic, durable and aesthetic solutions in most situations where bridges are needed. Concrete remains the most common material for bridge construction around the world, and prestressed concrete is frequently the material of choice. Extensively illustrated throughout, this invaluable book brings together all aspects of designing prestressed concrete bridge decks into one comprehensive volume. The book clearly explains the principles behind both the design and construction of prestressed concrete bridges, illustrating the interaction between the two. It covers all the different types of deck arrangement and the construction techniques used, ranging from in-situ slabs and precast beams; segmental construction and launched bridges; and cable-stayed structures. Included throughout the book are many examples of the different types of prestressed concrete decks used, with the design aspects of each discussed along with the general analysis and design process. Detailed descriptions of the prestressing components and systems used are also included. Prestressed Concrete Bridges is an essential reference book for both the experienced engineer and graduate who want to learn more about the subject.
