The Waterproofing of Fabrics (Classic Reprint)

The Waterproofing of Fabrics (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: S. Mierzinski

Book Description
Excerpt from The Waterproofing of Fabrics Appearance of a Waterproofed Fabric under the Microscope. -materials, when waterproofed by chemical agents, under go changes only visible under the microscope. If an um treated fibre be put under the microscope, and then brought into contact with a drop Of water, it will be seen to suck up the water greedily. But if it has been treated with alumina the water is not absorbed, and the drop looks like a pearl traversed by the dark threads. Many air-bells crowd round the separate threads and stick to them very obsti nately, so that even hard pressure with the cover glass does not get rid of them. The behaviour Of coloured fibres is different after they have been waterproofed with acetate Of alumina or a metallic soap. Here we usually find both the dye as a lake and the metallic oxide adhering to the fibre. If, however, the waterproofing be done with ammonium cuprate or other ammoniacal solutions of metallic oxides, not only is the deposit of metallic oxide to be seen, but it is evident that the fibre has been altered and parch mentized. Blends of Chemically Treated Cotton Fibers with Untreated Cotton Fibers to Improve Abrasion Resistance of Durable Press Garments (Classic Reprint)

Blends of Chemically Treated Cotton Fibers with Untreated Cotton Fibers to Improve Abrasion Resistance of Durable Press Garments (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Nestor B. Knoepfler

Book Description
Excerpt from Blends of Chemically Treated Cotton Fibers With Untreated Cotton Fibers to Improve Abrasion Resistance of Durable Press Garments While the application of resins to obtain wash-wear or easy-care properties in ap parel textile items has long been known to significantly lower their abrasion resist ance and strength, the problem was not too serious when chemical add-ons of only 3 to 4 percent were used. In the case of the deferred-cure resins, considerably higher chemical add-ons and higher curing temperatures have been used in the case of the conventional resins to speed production and to accomplish the curing of multiple layers of fabrics. The overall result of these changes has been that some permanent-press cotton apparel items were degraded to the point where significant abrasion damage resulted in fewer than 10 wash and tumble drying cycles. Functional Textiles for Improved Performance, Protection and Health

Functional Textiles for Improved Performance, Protection and Health PDF Author: N Pan
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0857092871
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 553

Book Description
The textile industry is increasingly based on ongoing innovation and development of higher performance products, and the field of functional textiles is no exception. This book explores the development of textiles with a wide range of functions, with the aim of improving the performance of the product in terms of the protection and health benefits that it can offer. The book is split into two parts. Part one focuses on functional textiles for improved performance and protection, with chapters reviewing antistatic, flame retardant and infrared functional textiles, among many others. Chapters in part two examine the uses of functional textiles in a medical context, including superhydrophobic materials, antibacterial textiles and insect-repellent materials. With its distinguished editors and contributions from some of the world’s leading authorities, Functional textiles for improved performance, protection and health is invaluable for textile scientists, technologists and engineers as well as those designing and manufacturing textiles. It is also a suitable reference for the academic sector. Examines the use of functional textiles in a medical context, including superhydrophobic materials, antibacterial textiles and insect-repellent materials Topics range from textile chemicals and their interaction with skin to novel pesticide protective clothing Considers anti-ultraviolet protection of clothing and flame retardant textiles

Waterproof and Water Repellent Textiles and Clothing

Waterproof and Water Repellent Textiles and Clothing PDF Author: John T Williams
Publisher: Woodhead Publishing
ISBN: 0081011342
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 586

Book Description
Waterproof and Water Repellent Textiles and Clothing provides systematic coverage of the key types of finishes and high performance materials, from conventional wax and silicone, through controversial, but widely used fluoropolymers and advanced techniques, such as atmospheric plasma deposition and sol-gel technology. The book is an essential resource for all those engaged in garment development, production and finishing, and for academics engaged in research into apparel technology and textile science. Rapid innovation in this field is driving new performance demands in many areas, including the sporting and military sectors. However, another innovation driver is the regulatory framework in the USA, Europe and globally, addressing both health concerns (e.g. with PFOS / PFOA) and environmental impacts (e.g. C8 fluorocarbon finishes). Both of these aspects are fully covered, along with the replacement materials / technologies currently available and under development. In addition, oleophobic and multifunctional coatings are discussed, as are aspects of performance, testing and applications in sportswear, protective clothing, and footwear. Introduces innovative materials and technologies, exploring their current and potential use across different sectors Provides expert guidance on the health and environmental aspects of key waterproof materials and coatings and their associated regulations Demystifies testing processes and design principles

Surface Modification to Improve Properties of Materials

Surface Modification to Improve Properties of Materials PDF Author: Miran Mozetič
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3038977969
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
This book contains selected contributions on surface modification to improve the properties of solid materials. The surface properties are tailored either by functionalization, etching, or deposition of a thin coating. Functionalization is achieved by a brief treatment with non-equilibrium gaseous plasma containing suitable radicals that interact chemically with the material surface and thus enable the formation of rather stable functional groups. Etching is performed in order to modify the surface morphology. The etching parameters are selected in such a way that a rich morphology of the surfaces is achieved spontaneously on the sub-micrometer scale, without using masks. The combination of adequate surface morphology and functionalization of materials leads to superior surface properties which are particularly beneficial for the desired response upon incubation with biological matter. Alternatively, the materials are coated with a suitable thin film that is useful in various applications from food to aerospace industries.
