Silvicultural Systems for the Production of Energy Biomass in Conventional Operations in Atlantic Canada

Silvicultural Systems for the Production of Energy Biomass in Conventional Operations in Atlantic Canada PDF Author: Pierre Zundel
Publisher: Canadian Government Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 48

Book Description
This report presents an analysis of silvicultural systems designed to produce energy biomass from conventional forestry operations in Atlantic Canada. It also analyzes policy changes and incentives that might make biomass energy more attractive in the region. This report also serves as a model for other stand-level studies of this type to be carried out in Canada, and therefore methodological issues such as the appropriate scale and point of view from which to evaluate biomass energy are discussed.

The impact of whole-tree and conventional harvesting on white birch sites in central Newfoundland

The impact of whole-tree and conventional harvesting on white birch sites in central Newfoundland PDF Author: B. A. Roberts
Publisher: St. John's, Nfld. : Canadian Forest Service, Newfoundland and Labrador Region
ISBN: 9780662229193
Category : Birch
Languages : en
Pages : 23

Book Description
White birch makes up about 12% of the total tree volume on the island of Newfoundland and is a major component in all balsam fir stands. This report describes a project involving the establishment of five major field studies conducted to assess the impact of whole-tree and conventional harvesting of white birch on future site productivity in central Newfoundland. The five studies include site selection, experimental layout, and biomass inventory; determination of the impact of harvesting on nutrient leaching rates; inventory of understory vegetation and description of disturbance plots and soils; determination of litter and slash decomposition rates; and quantification of litter production in white birch stands. The work is being conducted on three harvesting treatment plots established in each of three stands of five hectares or greater.
