Book Description
Whether precise orthodontic detailing of occlusion impacts masticatory function is unknown. Here, we aim to assess the impact of post-orthodontic occlusion on masticatory performance. Fifty-four adults who completed orthodontic treatment were categorized into two groups using the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) model grading system: one meeting ABO standards (ABO, N=29), the other failing to meet them (non-ABO, N=25). Surface electromyography and experimental chewing tests of silicone food were used to assess jaw muscle coordination during static and dynamic tests, and masticatory performance. Visual analogue scales were used for self-assessment of chewing function. The ABO group had more symmetric activation of the temporalis muscle during clenching (P=0.016) and chewed at a slower rate (P=0.030). Median particle size, broadness of particle distribution, and self-rating of chewing function did not differ between groups (all P>0.05). This study demonstrated that meeting ABO standards contributes to more balanced activation of jaw muscles during function.

Understanding Masticatory Function in Unilateral Crossbites
Author: Maria Grazia Piancino
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118971884
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
Unilateral posterior crossbite is a problem often seen in orthodontic practice, and properly understanding chewing patterns will lead to the most effective treatment program. Drawing on their research and available literature, Drs. Piancino and Kyrkanides present a fascinating look at chewing cycles and their role in the functional treatment of unilateral posterior crossbite. Describes the physiology and pathology of chewing patterns and muscular activation in humans Explains chewing patterns and muscular coordination, and their influence on the growth and harmony of the stomatognathic system Clinical instruction for checking and correcting masticatory function and functional asymmetry in order to prevent the relapse of the malocclusion Clinical cases walk readers through the treatment of seven crossbites

Practical Procedures in Dental Occlusion
Author: Ziad Al-Ani
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 111967851X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
A robust and accessible resource on occlusion for general dental practitioners Practical Procedures in Dental Occlusion delivers a solid and reliable exploration of dental occlusion. The book offers practical and accessible information about evidence-based techniques applicable to everyday clinical situations encountered in general practice. The authors provide a straightforward guide to the optimisation of restorative treatment outcomes, including occlusion in simple and advanced restorative care. The inclusion of questions at the end of the book, a glossary of useful terms and phrases in occlusion encourages self-assessment. Readers will also find: Thorough introductions to common prosthodontic terms, neuromuscular philosophies, and the equipment and techniques used in occlusal examination Practical explorations of typical problems faced by practitioners when recording occlusal contacts using different articulating papers Overviews of “high crown” clinical scenarios, including the importance of opposing alginate impressions and cast mounting An insightful treatment of the clinical scenario of a fractured upper central incisor composite restoration Perfect for undergraduate dental students and general dental practitioners, Practical Procedures in Dental Occlusion is a valuable resource for those seeking a systematic and logical treatment of the management of occlusal problems.
