A Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a set of wireless mobile devices which are connected together without using any infrastructure. The mobility of devices in MANET continuously changes the network topology and that makes routing between devices more complicated. Examples of such networks include networks for trucks on interstate highways, remote environmental and animal-movement outposts, wireless military battlefield networks that connect troops, aircraft, satellites, and sensors on land and in water, and Interplanetary networks. Three factors significantly influence the end-to-end performance in terms of Quality of Service (QoS); (i) mobility pattern/model, (ii) underlying routing algorithm and (iii) traffic patterns. While several theoretical models exist to describe mobility, traffic pattern, and routing algorithms, developing a model to collectively incorporate mobility, routing, and traffic is intractable. In this thesis, we intend to develop simulation models that bring these three factors together and measure applications performance in terms of end-to-end throughput (bit rate), latency, and jitter. Three classes of MANET routing algorithms (Proactive, Reactive, and Hybrid), two mobility models (Random Waypoint and Group), and three classes of traffic patterns (constant bit rate, variable bit rate, and random) have been investigated. Our result shows the relationship between these parameters and determines which routing algorithm is suitable for specific mobility model and specific traffic pattern.

In this book, we start by describing all VANET basic concepts such as VANET definition, VANET versus Mobile ad-Hoc Network (MANET), architectures, routing definition and steps, Quality of Service (QoS) for VANET Routing, Metrics of evaluation, Experimentation, and simulation of VANETs, mobility patterns of VANET etc. Moreover, different routing protocols for routing in VANETs will be described. We propose two main categories to be presented: classical routing and bio-inspired routing. Concerning classical VANET, main principles and all phases will be overviewed, as well as, their two sub-categories which are topological and geographical protocols. After that, we propose a new category called bio-inspired routing which is inspired by natural phenomenon such as Ant colony, Bee life, Genetic operators etc. We present also, some referential protocols as example of each category. In this book, we focus on the idea of how to apply bio-inspired principle into VANET routing to improve road safety, and to ensure QoS of vehicular applications.

"MANETs are coping with major challenges such as the lack of infrastructure and mobility which causes networks topology to change dynamically. Due to limited resources, nodes have to collaborate and rely packets on the behalf of neighbors to reach their destinations forming multi-hop paths. The selection and maintenance of multi-hop paths is a challenging task as their stability and availability depend on the mobility of participating nodes, where paths used a few moments earlier would be rendered invalid due to ever changing topology. The purpose of a routing protocol is to establish and select valid paths between communicating nodes and repair or remove invalid ones. As mobility rate increases, routing protocols spend more time in path maintenance and less time in actual data communication, degrading network performance. This interaction among mobility, topology and routing performance is usually empirically studied through simulations. This dissertation will provide a novel deep analytical study of the root cause of performance degradation with mobility. This is accomplished by, firstly, studying how mobility impacts durations of topology paths called Topological modeling. Secondly, analyzing how routing protocols adapt to topology changes in Adaptability modeling which identifies AdaptationDelays representing the time taken by a routing protocol to translate a change in topology to logical information used in path selection. Combining the results from these two studies, performance models of routing protocols are obtained, which later is used to optimize its operation.
