Book Description
Recently both the Alcator C-Mod and DIII-D tokamaks observed significant recombination of major ion species in the divertor region during detachment. For sufficiently low temperatures the mixture of neutral atoms and ions can be optically thick to line radiation. The optical depth of the recombined region to Ly[alpha] radiation can be very large and opacity effects and radiation trapping can dramatically change the heat flux to the divertor walls. This paper presents an analysis of the effect of line radiation on volume recombination using CRETIN, a multi-dimensional, non-local thermodynamic equilibrium simulation code that includes the atomic kinetics and radiative transport processes necessary to model this complex environment.

Radiative Processes in Astrophysics

Radiative Processes in Astrophysics PDF Author: George B. Rybicki
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 352761818X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 402

Book Description
Radiative Processes in Astrophysics: This clear, straightforward, and fundamental introduction is designed to present-from a physicist's point of view-radiation processes and their applications to astrophysical phenomena and space science. It covers such topics as radiative transfer theory, relativistic covariance and kinematics, bremsstrahlung radiation, synchrotron radiation, Compton scattering, some plasma effects, and radiative transitions in atoms. Discussion begins with first principles, physically motivating and deriving all results rather than merely presenting finished formulae. However, a reasonably good physics background (introductory quantum mechanics, intermediate electromagnetic theory, special relativity, and some statistical mechanics) is required. Much of this prerequisite material is provided by brief reviews, making the book a self-contained reference for workers in the field as well as the ideal text for senior or first-year graduate students of astronomy, astrophysics, and related physics courses. Radiative Processes in Astrophysics also contains about 75 problems, with solutions, illustrating applications of the material and methods for calculating results. This important and integral section emphasizes physical intuition by presenting important results that are used throughout the main text; it is here that most of the practical astrophysical applications become apparent.

Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation

Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation PDF Author: Committee to Assess Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309133343
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 422

Book Description
This book is the seventh in a series of titles from the National Research Council that addresses the effects of exposure to low dose LET (Linear Energy Transfer) ionizing radiation and human health. Updating information previously presented in the 1990 publication, Health Effects of Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation: BEIR V, this book draws upon new data in both epidemiologic and experimental research. Ionizing radiation arises from both natural and man-made sources and at very high doses can produce damaging effects in human tissue that can be evident within days after exposure. However, it is the low-dose exposures that are the focus of this book. So-called “late” effects, such as cancer, are produced many years after the initial exposure. This book is among the first of its kind to include detailed risk estimates for cancer incidence in addition to cancer mortality. BEIR VII offers a full review of the available biological, biophysical, and epidemiological literature since the last BEIR report on the subject and develops the most up-to-date and comprehensive risk estimates for cancer and other health effects from exposure to low-level ionizing radiation.

Numerical Astrophysics

Numerical Astrophysics PDF Author: Shoken M. Miyama
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780792355663
Category : Mathematics
Languages : zh-TW
Pages : 470

Book Description
This book contains all the oral and poster sessions presented at the `Numerical Astrophysics 1998' symposium held in Tokyo on March 10-13, 1998. It covers a wide variety of research fields, from the large-scale structure of the Universe to planetary systems. Astrophysics employing all kinds of supercomputers, such as massive-parallel computers, parallel vector machines, and special-purpose computers, are included. Recent progress in numerical methods, remote data analysis, and special-purpose computers are also reviewed. This book is suitable for researchers and graduate students in astronomy/astrophysics, who want an overview of the present research fronts based on supercomputing.

Radiation Effects And Soft Errors In Integrated Circuits And Electronic Devices

Radiation Effects And Soft Errors In Integrated Circuits And Electronic Devices PDF Author: Ronald D Schrimpf
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814482153
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 349

Book Description
This book provides a detailed treatment of radiation effects in electronic devices, including effects at the material, device, and circuit levels. The emphasis is on transient effects caused by single ionizing particles (single-event effects and soft errors) and effects produced by the cumulative energy deposited by the radiation (total ionizing dose effects). Bipolar (Si and SiGe), metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS), and compound semiconductor technologies are discussed. In addition to considering the specific issues associated with high-performance devices and technologies, the book includes the background material necessary for understanding radiation effects at a more general level.

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy PDF Author: Sergio Musazzi
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642450857
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 577

Book Description
This book deals with the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) a widely used atomic emission spectroscopy technique for elemental analysis of materials. It is based on the use of a high-power, short pulse laser excitation. The book is divided into two main sections: the first one concerning theoretical aspects of the technique, the second one describing the state of the art in applications of the technique in different scientific/technological areas. Numerous examples of state of the art applications provide the readers an almost complete scenario of the LIBS technique. The LIBS theoretical aspects are reviewed. The book helps the readers who are less familiar with the technique to understand the basic principles. Numerous examples of state of the art applications give an almost complete scenario of the LIBS technique potentiality. These examples of applications may have a strong impact on future industrial utilization. The authors made important contributions to the development of this field.
