Assessing the Demographic Impact of Development Projects

Assessing the Demographic Impact of Development Projects PDF Author: A. S. Oberai
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 041506841X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 158

Book Description
Very little is currently known about the demographic impact of most development projects and the ways in which this impact can be assessed. This book, based on studies in Third World countries, focuses on conceptual, methodological and policy issues in its evaluation of the demographic impact of development projects. The author examines whether demographic effects can be assessed and why development planners should be interested in the results. A.S. Oberai examines to what extent economic and social ranges generated by specific development interventions have influenced demographic behavior in a particular context. He suggests how desired effects can be enhanced and undesirable effects minimized by policy-makers and planners in developing countries in order to deal with problems of population growth and its distribution. The major shortcomings of existing methodologies are identified and future directions which research might take are outlined. The study is based on a synthesis of country studiesreviewing the demographic impact of development projects carried out in Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. It also includes analyses of the demographic impact of development interventions in several other countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, and Nigeria. Impact of Modernization on Development and Demographic Behaviour

Impact of Modernization on Development and Demographic Behaviour PDF Author: International Development Research Centre (Canada)
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 146

Book Description
Articles in this volume focus on the impact of rural development policies and projects on demographic behaviour in seven countries in Asia and Latin America. The Phillipines study examines changes over time in two rural communities in Southern Mindanao influenced by the Green Revolution and agrarian reform. The Malaysian project investigates the impact of modern industrial expansion in a traditional rural area upon the family economy and gender roles. In Bangladesh, the effect of an integrated program for rural development upon demographic change, especially on fertility and family-planning behaviour, is examined. The Indian study focuses on the relationship between child labour and fertility in a village where jewelry-making is an important cottage industry. In rural Colombia, demographic and economic behaviour are compared in three different economic sectors. The Argentinian study investigates the demographic and economic characteristics of households belonging to different agricultural sectors of a relatively underdeveloped province. Finally, in Peru, demographic and economic behaviour in four rural areas, characterized by different levels of development, are compared.

Agricultural Development and Demographic Change

Agricultural Development and Demographic Change PDF Author: Debashis Mallick
Publisher: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
ISBN: 9783659189739
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 120

Book Description
The consequences Of Green Revolution have been shown in this study to be important for demographic changes, particularly for birth rates. An effort has been made here to establish the various influences of agricultural development and some socio-economic-demographic factors in fertility. Agricultural development with its accompanying socio-economic changes was able to change the perceived benefit-cost matrix in respect of number of children from the point of view of rural parents leading them to choose a significantly smaller family size over the years. By and large, the exercise seems to fit quite well with the expected behavioural framework of the theory of household, which highlights female education, female employment and a continuation of technological transformation of Indian agriculture as potential areas for policy regarding fertility control. This book should help shed light on the complex relationship between population growth and economic change and should be of interest to researchers and policy makers in the related area.
