Book Description
Until quite recently, the field of reproductive immunology was very much a neglected area of biology, seen by most reproductive physiologists as of only peripheral importance. It was generally acknowledged as curious that a female mammal tolerated the intrusion of alien sperm and the persisting presence of an alien fetus, while reserving the prerogative of rejecting grafts of tissue, even when these were from her own mate. Several theories were advanced to explain this paradox, each with some supporting evidence: all were eventually shown to be inadequate. And there the matter was, on the whole, permitted to rest. In the last few years, the situation has changed dramatically, and the neglected area of overlap between immunology and reproduction has again become densely populated by research workers. As a symptom of this resurgence of interest, a specialist journal (the Journal of Reproductive Immunology) has been launched to supply what had rapidly been perceived as a need.

Immunological Aspects of Reproduction in Mammals

Immunological Aspects of Reproduction in Mammals PDF Author: D. B. Crighton
Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann
ISBN: 1483162958
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 542

Book Description
Immunological Aspects of Reproduction in Mammals contains papers presented during a symposium at the University of Nottingham Easter School. The scholarly presentations provide a wealth of information on the field of reproductive immunology and indicate just how complex this field is and how many questions still remain to be answered. The book begins with reviews of the current status of the complexities and uncertainties of the cellular basis of the immune response and the structure and function of antibodies. This is followed by separate chapters on the assessment and interpretation of the phenomena surrounding autoimmune and isoimmune reactions to spermatozoa; advances in defining the distribution and degree of exposure of major histocompatibility antigens; the reproductive immunology of the mouse, horse, and sheep; and fetal and neonatal immunity. Subsequent chapters present studies of immunization of several species with either the hypothalamic hormone LH-RH, pituitary gonadotrophins, or ovarian steroids; and studies directed towards efforts to enhance animal production by either active or passive immunization of female farm animals against steroid hormones. This book will be a valuable reference text for those already involved in the field and a stimulus for others to enter this complex and fascinating area of research.

Immunological Aspects of Reproduction and Fertility Control

Immunological Aspects of Reproduction and Fertility Control PDF Author: J.P. Hearn
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401180393
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
The no-man's-land between reproductive physiology and immunology is becoming crowded. The last 10 years have seen a revolution in our under standing of many reproductive processes, brought about by the application of ever more sophisticated immunological methods. The increasing precision of these techniques has given us specific ways of assaying, enhancing or blocking hormonal mechanisms to yield more critical and interpretable information. In this volume eleven authors have presented the current status and future prospects of some immunological aspects of reproduction and fertility con trol. These include the relationships between mother and fetus, the diagnosis of pregnancy, the immunological complications seen in clinical management of human reproduction and some novel approaches for immunological control of fertility. We hope that in these chapters we have achieved an up-to-date account of a fast-moving field that calls on several disciplines. We intend the book to provide an adequate background and a current review for research workers and clinicians who wish both to understand the complex mechanisms involved and to develop improved scientific and clinical methods. We hope too that the student and newcomer will find this a useful reference book.

Book Description
The book is expected to include in the investigation of microbiology, immunology, and creature generation as a prologue to more broad examinations. An outline of immunology is given in the book to allude instantly any fundamental data required, for additionally comprehension of the subject managed in this book. The book is secured may give the basic part to the fundamental comprehension of the conceptive immunology in creatures. It is intended to supplement, yet not to contend with the few books accessible as to multiplication. Immunological Aspects of Reproduction in creatures contains abundance of data on the field of conceptive immunology and show exactly how complex this field is and what number of inquiries still stay to be replied. Inoculation of a few animal groups with either the hypothalamic hormone LH-RH, pituitary gonadotrophins, or ovarian steroids; and concentrates guided towards endeavors to improve creature generation by either dynamic or inactive vaccination of female ranch creatures against steroid hormones.

Immunological Influence on Human Fertility

Immunological Influence on Human Fertility PDF Author: Barry Boettcher
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483268950
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
Immunological Influence on Human Fertility covers the proceedings of the Workshop on Fertility in Human Reproduction, held at the Department of Biological Science, University of Newcastle, Australia on July 11 -13, 1977. The book focuses on topics on the immunological control of human and animal fertility. The selection first discusses the zona pellucida as a possible target in immunocontraception, immunological aspects of vasectomy, and the clinical significance of antibodies to spermatozoa. Topics include performance and significance of the SCMC-test, antibodies and fertility after vasovasostomy, vasectomy and the blood-testis barrier, cellular immune response, active and passive immunization, and tissue and species specificity. The book then tackles the nature of the barrier to autoimmunity in the excurrent ducts of the mammalian testis, immune activities of the male and female reproductive tracts, and isolation of spermatozoal antigens. The manuscript examines the immunological capacity of the male genital tract, clinical significance of antibodies to antigens of the reproductive tract, immunological aspects of vasectomy, and antigens of human trophoblasts. The text also takes a look at the immunological and anti-tumor effects of orchidectomy, immune infertility and approaches to treatment, natural insemination as an immune phenomenon, and modified seminal plasma antigens and subfertility. The selection is a valuable source of information for researchers wanting to study the immunological control of human and animal fertility.
