Book Description
The Spanish economy has been resilient to successive shocks, whose effects were mitigated by unprecedented policy support that is now being phased out. The labor market performance has been exceptionally strong, and some of its perennial deficiencies—most notably the large share of temporary workers and high unemployment—have eased. Growth is projected to reach 2.4 percent in 2024, and headline and core inflation are expected to converge close to the ECB’s target before mid-2025. Risks have become more balanced but are still tilted to the downside for growth and the upside for inflation, including predominantly domestic risks (political fragmentation, under-execution of NGEU spending) but also global risks (energy price volatility, geopolitical risks, geo-economic fragmentation).

Book Description
This Selected Issues paper analyzes the challenges for the Spanish pension system. Spain’s population, like those in many other advanced economies, is projected to age over the coming decades. Although projections are uncertain, the simple fact is that Spain’s aging and shrinking population has put and will continue to put relentless pressure on contributory pension finances. The reforms adopted in 2011 and 2013 if fully implemented will ensure the financial viability of the contributory pension system. A package of reforms could include parametric changes such as automatically linking the retirement age to changes in life expectancy and adjusting accrual rates and the calculation of pensionable earnings.

Book Description
This Technical Note discusses the findings and recommendations in the Financial Sector Assessment Program for Spain in the areas of impaired assets and nonperforming loans (NPLs). The size of the problem assets varies significantly across banks and is concentrated in those exposed to residential mortgages and real-estate-related firms, whose NPLs represent about 57 percent of all NPLs. A tough stance on the implementation of the European Central Bank (ECB) guidance on NPLs is desirable. Ideally, in the case of Spain, the cleanup should be completed before the expiration of the ECB’s long-term support. Targets to reduce problem assets should be ambitious, and failure to comply should have prudential consequences.
