Imaging of the Scrotum & Penis PDF Author: Matthew Rifkin

Pages : 304

Book Description
Imaging has always played an important part in the diagnosis of the various problems associated with the genitalia and reproductive organs. Diagnostic applications for patients have evolved over past decades, however imaging has not progressed as rapidly for male patients as for female patients. Imaging has now earned a significant place in the diagnostic armory for women. In recent years, there has been increasing awareness of male health issues - in particular the rising incidence of testicular tumors. Inevitably this has resulted in both an increased demand for imaging of the male genitalia and higher expectations of these studies. During the last decade the development of high resolution ultrasound equipment, Doppler and color Doppler have revolutionized the approach to imaging the external genitalia. Contrast radiography and nuclear medicine have been largely replaced by ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Designed as a problem-solving text, Imaging of the Scrotum and Penis employs a symptom-related approach, starting with the clinical history and physical examination, progressing to the appropriate imaging modalities. It provides both an overview and an in-depth analysis of the various imaging approaches used in the evaluation of diseases of the external male genitalia. The main imaging modality used for the scrotum is ultrasound, and discussion of ultrasound images (including color Doppler studies) comprises the largest part of the book. The place of problem-solving MRI studies and their interpretation is also discussed in great detail together with the more minor roles played by other modalities: isotope studies, CT, plain radiography and angiography. Imaging and applications of the newer imaging techniques that evaluate the penis, the anterior urethra and erectile dysfunction are also evaluated. Generous use is made of flow diagrams and diagnostic tables and the text is comprehensively illustrated. Imaging of the Scrotum and Penis will be of interest to radiologists - especially diagnostic radiologists who must understand the embryology, anatomy, pathology and imaging findings in the variety of clinical problems that can and do affect the male patient. It will also be of value to urologists, primary care health providers, sonographers and other imaging technologists and assist the referring clinician in deciding which imaging study should be initially ordered - a particularly important issue in the era of cost containment in medicine. Key Features: * Uses a symptom-related approach, starting with the clinical history and physical examination, progressing to the appropriate imaging modalities * Provides both an overview and an in-depth analysis of the various imaging approaches used in the evaluation of diseases of the external male genitalia * Illustrated with over 690 photographs, diagrams and tables

Imaging and Intervention in Urinary Tract Infections and Urosepsis

Imaging and Intervention in Urinary Tract Infections and Urosepsis PDF Author: Massimo Tonolini
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319682768
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 237

Book Description
Aimed at practicing clinicians and radiologists, this volume provides up-to-date, detailed information on potentially severe urinary tract infections (UTIs), which frequently require intensive in-patient antibiotic therapy, percutaneous or surgical treatment. UTIs are the most prevalent infectious illness, and account for hundreds of thousands of emergency and hospital admissions yearly. Furthermore, UTIs are the most common (almost 40%) type of hospital-acquired infections, with bladder catheterisation being the key risk factor. According to the European Association of Urology guidelines, complicated urinary tract infections (C-UTIs) are those associated with structural or functional genitourinary abnormalities or with conditions that impair the host’s defence mechanisms, leading to an increased risk of acquiring infection or therapy failure. Besides offering current perspectives from urologists, nephrologists, and specialists in infectious diseases, the book presents the techniques and highlights the role of ultrasound and contrast-enhanced ultrasound, nuclear medicine, multidetector computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in providing comprehensive investigations of upper and lower tract UTIs, and of systemic infections from unknown sources. Cross-sectional imaging is currently recommended to confirm UTI, to assess severity and look for underlying treatable structural or functional abnormalities, in order to provide a consistent basis for a correct therapeutic choice. Furthermore, dedicated chapters illustrate the current status of UTI imaging in children and the expanding role and possibilities of interventional radiology in the treatment of severe urinary tract infections.

Why Is the Penis Shaped Like That?

Why Is the Penis Shaped Like That? PDF Author: Jesse Bering
Publisher: Scientific American / Farrar, Straus and Giroux
ISBN: 1429955104
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 319

Book Description
Why do testicles hang the way they do? Is there an adaptive function to the female orgasm? What does it feel like to want to kill yourself? Does "free will" really exist? And why is the penis shaped like that anyway? In Why Is the Penis Shaped Like That?, the research psychologist and award-winning columnist Jesse Bering features more than thirty of his most popular essays from Scientific American and Slate, as well as two new pieces, that take readers on a bold and captivating journey through some of the most taboo issues related to evolution and human behavior. Exploring the history of cannibalism, the neurology of people who are sexually attracted to animals, the evolution of human body fluids, the science of homosexuality, and serious questions about life and death, Bering astutely covers a generous expanse of our kaleidoscope of quirks and origins. With his characteristic irreverence and trademark cheekiness, Bering leaves no topic unturned or curiosity unexamined, and he does it all with an audaciously original voice. Whether you're interested in the psychological history behind the many facets of sexual desire or the evolutionary patterns that have dictated our current mystique and phallic physique, Why Is the Penis Shaped Like That? is bound to create lively discussion and debate for years to come.
