Book Description
This book is a collection of stories, poems and articles about life and certain lessons gleaned from experiencing all it has to offer. Living as a disabled person presents all sorts of challenges and opportunities. The research is backed by reputable sources and is an in-depth exploration of the interesting perspectives offered by someone who has lived on both sides of the disability spectrum (PWDs). "I am unable to fathom how I would think, feel and live if rendered immobile and wheelchair-bound for the rest of my life from my mid-twenties. The mental storeroom of childhood years of going around and about with parents, siblings, friends, schoolmates, and teen years of secondary school and university life with such variety of social activities and physical interactions, and more, will be running riot when just bludgeoned by one incident into numberless, numbing could-have-beens or what-now-possible reflections and scenarios. What we have in this forthrightly brilliant and surreal collection of thoughts and facts include winged wheels of those inflicted, rolling through life with ruminations, a glimpse of the world through their eyes, some tales by sunlight and various verses which speak of them and on their behalf." - Professor Dafe Otobo, DPhil (Oxford), Lagos, Nigeria

Imagination and Meaning in Calvin and Hobbes

Imagination and Meaning in Calvin and Hobbes PDF Author: Jamey Heit
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786490314
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
From 1985 to 1995, the syndicated comic strip Calvin and Hobbes followed the antics of a precocious six-year-old boy and his sardonic stuffed tiger. At the height of its popularity, the strip ran in more than 2,400 newspapers and generated a fan base that continues to run in the millions. This critical analysis of Calvin and Hobbes explores Calvin's world and its deep reservoir of meanings. Close readings of individual strips highlight the profundity of Calvin's world with respect to a number of life's big questions, including the things that one values, friendship, God, death, and other struggles in life. By engaging with Calvin and Hobbes as more than "just" a comic strip, this work demonstrates how the imagination remains an invaluable resource for making sense of the world. Reading the Fantastic Imagination

Reading the Fantastic Imagination PDF Author: Dana Percec
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443862975
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
The purpose of Reading the Fantastic Imagination: The Avatars of a Literary Genre is the observation of the very hybridity of the fantastic genre, as a typical postmodern form. The volume continues an older project of the editor and a large number of the contributors, that of investigating the current status of several popular genres, from historical fiction to romance. The scrutiny continues in this third volume, dedicated to the fantastic imagination and the plethora of themes, moods, media, and formats deriving from it. FanLit is surely trendy, even if it is not highbrow, despite its noble ancestry. This apparent paradox characterizes many of the literary genres en vogue today, from historical fiction to romance. This very contradiction forms part of the basis for this book. After the success of the previous book in the series dedicated to a “borderline” literary genre – Romance: The History of a Genre was declared by Cambridge Scholars Publishing as the Critics’ Choice Book of the Month in January 2013 – this collection of studies about the fantastic imagination takes a further step into completing a larger research project which seeks to investigate the varieties of popular fiction. Although all contributors in the series teach canonical literary texts, they did not hesitate to plunge into the opposite area of fictional work and, moreover, continued doing so even though such a project caused the “raise of a few (high)brows,” (Percec 2012, 232) as argued in the Endnote of Romance: The History of a Genre.
