In Potential Images Dario Gamboni explores ambiguity in modern art, considering images that rely to a great degree on a projected or imaginative response from viewers to achieve their effect. Ambiguity became increasingly important in late 19th- and early 20th-century aesthetics, as is evidenced in works by such artists as Redon, Cezanne, Gauguin, Ensor and the Nabis. Similarly, the Cubists subverted traditional representational conventions, requiring their viewers to decipher images to extract their full meanings. The same device was taken up in the various experiments leading to abstraction. For example, it was Kandinsky's intention that his work could be interpreted in both figurative and non-figurative ways, and Duchamp's Readymades suggested the radical conclusion that 'it is the beholder who makes the picture'. These invitations to viewers to participate in the process of artistic communication had social and political implications, as they accorded artist and beholder symmetrical, almost interchangeable, roles.

What do photographs want? Do they need any accompaniment in today's image-saturated society? Can writing inflect photography (or vice versa) in such a way that neither medium takes precedence? Or are they in constant, inexorable battle with each other? Taking nine case studies from the 1990s French-speaking world (from France, North Africa and the Caribbean), this book attempts to define the interaction between non-fictional written text (caption, essay, fragment, poem) and photographic image. Having considered three categories of 'intermediality' between text and photography - the collaborative, the self-collaborative and the retrospective - the book concludes that the dimensions of their interaction are not simple and two-fold (visuality versus/alongside textuality), but threefold and therefore 'complex'. Thus, the photo-text, as defined here, is concerned as much with orality - the demotic, the popular, the vernacular - as it is with visual and written culture. That text-image collaborations give space to the spoken, spectral traces of human discourse, suggests that the key element of the photo-text is its radical provisionality.

Morgan Fisher, an artist and filmmaker, was born in Washington, D.C., in 1942. He received an A.B. in art history from Harvard College, then studied film production in Los Angeles. His films have been shown at international film festivals (Berlin, Rotterdam, London, among others) and in one-person screenings or exhibitions at, among other places, Tate Modern, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. In the early 1990s he started making works on paper, then paintings and sculptures. One-person exhibitions that included examples of such work were at Portikus, Raven Row, Museum Abteiberg, Generali Foundation, and Aspen Art Museum. More recently, he has exhibited photographs. He was in the 1985, 2004, and 2014 Whitney Biennials. A collection of his writings was published in 2012 by Walther König. He has been a visiting teacher at Brown University, California Institute of the Arts, and the University of California, Los Angeles. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
