Converso Non-Conformism in Early Modern Spain

Converso Non-Conformism in Early Modern Spain PDF Author: Kevin Ingram
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319932365
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 370

Book Description
This book examines the effects of Jewish conversions to Christianity in late medieval Spanish society. Ingram focuses on these converts and their descendants (known as conversos) not as Judaizers, but as Christian humanists, mystics and evangelists, who attempt to create a new society based on quietist religious practice, merit, and toleration. His narrative takes the reader on a journey from the late fourteenth-century conversions and the first blood purity laws (designed to marginalize conversos), through the early sixteenth-century Erasmian and radical mystical movements, to a Counter-Reformation environment in which conversos become the advocates for pacifism and concordance. His account ends at the court of Philip IV, where growing intolerance towards Madrid’s converso courtiers is subtly attacked by Spain’s greatest painter, Diego Velázquez, in his work, Los Borrachos. Finally, Ingram examines the historiography of early modern Spain, in which he argues the converso reform phenomenon continues to be underexplored.

Book Description
"This volume provides a critical look at that which has been a watershed in Dominique Perrault's creative development, namely the realization of the Velodrome and Olympic Swimming Pool in Berlin: a fundamental sign of an architectural research in pursuit of redesigning the landscape. It examines his recent works which have been characterized by a continuous attention to research on architectural language and the relationship between public and private space in an attempt to trace a "third way" - moving towards an integration with the environment in which the geographic matrix and experimentation take precedence over historical aspects. The volume features two very recent projects under way started in 2004 and 2003 respectively, the Ewha Women's Campus in Seoul, Korea and the new Mariinsky Opera House in Saint Petersburg." "These works and other such as the Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris, the extension of the European Community's Court of Justice in Luxembourg and the Media Library of Venissieux have served to confirm Dominique Perrault's position among the most significant protagonists of contemporary architecture." --Book Jacket.

Atget's Seven Albums

Atget's Seven Albums PDF Author: Molly Nesbit
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780300059168
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 428

Book Description
Between 1909 and 1915 Eugène Atget produced seven albums filled with photographs of Paris at the height of its belle époque. This book presents Atget's albums in full for the first time, edited with the sequencing and repetition that the great photographer intended. In addition, Atget's pictures are analyzed in an altogether new way; as commercial picture documents produced by a photographer for the artists, archivists, antiquarians, designers, and builders who were his clients. Atget's Seven Albums is thus many books-a critical edition, a fresh view of Atget's work, a new kind of history of photography, and a social history of art and of Paris in the early twentieth century.

Intimate Geometries

Intimate Geometries PDF Author: Robert Storr
Publisher: The Monacelli Press, LLC
ISBN: 1580933637
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 829

Book Description
In a career spanning nearly 75 years, Louise Bourgeois created a vast body of work that enriched the formal language of modern art while it expressed her intense inner struggles with unprecedented candor and unpredictable invention. Her solo 1982 retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art launched an extraordinarily productive late career, making her a much-honored and vivid presence on the international art scene until her death in 2010 at the age of 98. Trained as a painter and printmaker, Bourgeois embraced sculpture as her primary medium and experimented with a range of materials over the years, including marble, plaster, bronze, wood, and latex. Bourgeois contributed significantly to Surrealism, Postminimalist, and installation art, but her work always remained fiercely independent of style or movement. With more than 1000 illustrations, Intimate Geometries: The Art and Life of Louise Bourgeois comprehensively surveys her immense oeuvre in unmatched depth. Writing from a uniquely intimate perspective, as a close personal friend of Bourgeois, and drawing on decades of research, Robert Storr critically evaluates her achievements and reveals the complexity and passion of one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.
