Book Description
In the preparation of this descriptive manual of the rust fungi of the grasses of the world the principal goal was to produce a system by which these important pathogens might be recognized on the basis of their morophology, without dependence on the identity of the host plant. This is an Utopian goal and, being Utopian, has doubtless not been attained. But it is better to have tried and partially failed than not to have tried at all. The first attempt to revise the classification on a new basis utilized the rust fungi of the tribe Andropogoneae. A "Group System" was initiated (Uredineana 4:5-89. 1953) based on the uredinial stage. The attempt was satisfactory at the time, but was not adaptable when all grass rust fungi were considered. Consequently, an expanded system was employed when I attempted a summarization of all grass rust fungi. The expanded scheme (Plant Disease Reporter Supplement 237:1-52. 1956) of 9 Groups proved to be a most helpful organizational system and is used here (see explanations, p. Xi) in Puccinia, Uromyces, and Uredo. The system is useful and does aggregate generally similar species, rather than segregating them as in a host-based arrangement. The characters used, i.e. presence or absence of paraphyses, arrangement of germ pores, and echinulate or verrucose spore surface, are subject to minimal intergradations.

Book Description
The comprehensive introductory chapters indude general information on rust fungi: economic importance, symptoms, collection and identification, host-rust relationships, phylogeny and relationship to other groups of fungi, morphology of spore states and vegeta tive structures, life cydes, cytology, host-rust relationships, and descriptions as well as a key to 13 families. The main body of the book consists of descriptions, illustrations, and keys to 120 holomorph genera and 13 anamorph genera of rust fungi worldwide. Each genus description indudes information on the pertinent microscopic features, type species, number of induded species, hosts, distribution, relevant literature, and drawings or micrographs of diagnostic features. Other new additions are eight full-page color plates containing more than 60 photographs that illustrate various signs and symptoms of rust fungi, an extensive list of general references on rust fungi, a list of descriptive manuaIs and regional flora, a list of authors' names and recommended abbreviations, and a glossary of mycological terms. What are the rust fungi? . The Triumph of the Fungi

The Triumph of the Fungi PDF Author: Nicholas P. Money
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 019518971X
Category : Nature

Book Description
"Everyone is aware of the nineteenth-century Irish potato famine, but fungal diseases of many other crops have had similarly apocalyptic consequences. Today, coffee, cacao, and rubber are threatened by fungi throughout the tropics. Indeed, fungi have carved their way through the ages, attacking every plant that we cultivate, constantly exploiting new hosts. In The Triumph of the Fungi, Nicholas Money offers an intimate picture of these pernicious microbes, the scientists who have sought to control them, and the people directly impacted by the loss of forest trees and cash crops. Even with the development of fungicides and other scientific breakthroughs, fungi continue to be unstoppable - this is the story of their triumph."--BOOK JACKET.
