Languages of the Wider World

Languages of the Wider World PDF Author: Itesh Sachdev
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134910231
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 146

Book Description
The last few decades have seen a stretching and exchange of local, regional and national languages, identities, cultures, and economies worldwide as a consequence of globalisation and technology development. Significantly, the languages of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Russia have been attracting increasing strategic, commercial and civic attention. Collectively referred to as ‘Languages of the Wider World’ (LWW), these languages are important given the emergence of new centres of capital and cultural accumulation in the 21st century, such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs). This volume focuses on LWW in use, and on their teaching and learning. It ranges from a highly localized focus (on learners and teachers of Community/Heritage Languages), to broader national and international foci (on policy makers and multilingualism; on teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary systems). It aims to inspire researchers and practitioners to work on languages other than the ones that have been the mainstay of the field to facilitate the development of a vibrant and critical community of enquiry in Languages of the Wider World. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Language Learning Journal.

Teachers' Research in Language Education

Teachers' Research in Language Education PDF Author: Verónica Sánchez Hernández
Publisher: Common Ground Research Networks
ISBN: 186335235X
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 421

Book Description
Over the past decade, interest in language teacher education and professionalization programs has increased significantly mainly due to global educational reforms, which have been driven by internationalization, multilingualism, the rise of new literacy and the incorporation of technologies. These reforms, based on the challenges of knowledge societies and networks, have created the need to re-evaluate and reconceptualize teacher training and teacher professional development as a "fundamental connection to teaching" (Bryant et al., 2008; Vélaz de Medrano & Vaillant, 2009; Espinosa, 2012; Johnson and Golombeck, 2018). The main objective is, then, to “prepare the new generations within an increasingly uncertain and demanding global scenario” (Pérez Ruíz, 2014, p 114). This publication addresses work on the education of language teachers in a variety of sociocultural, educational and institutional contexts carried out in Mexico and Latin America with various methodological designs and approaches from different theoretical perspectives. Therefore, in the context of current challenges, we seek to promote the exchange, discussions of experience and results of research and reflection that can influence the direction and implementation of language policies regarding teacher education and teacher professionalization for language teaching.

ISBN: 1134725736
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 301

Book Description

In addition to the core subjects, opportunities in music, P.E., I.T. and design technology are examined in the context of the interrelationship between children, language and learning, i.e.: * children learning to use language * children using language to learn * children learning about language Chapters describe classroom practice as well as offering reflective sections on the interrelationships and processes of language and cognitive development. An integral part of this is the acknowledgement of differing learning styles, special educational needs, and issues of linguistic diversity and cultural difference.
