Book Description
This work follows the ICDL (International Certification of Digital Literacy) Database Basic and Advanced Syllabus, expanded according to the document on Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Computer Science of December 20, 2013 by the Association for Computing Machinery and IEEE Computer Society. As for the know-how aspects (skills), some use Microsoft Access, which is not professional and has a non-standard version of SQL. This text uses MySQL and SQLite. They are professional, open source, totally free and widely used and easy to install. This satisfies the skills of the ICDL modules. However, the question of how to use this data remains. To do this today you need to master the Python language or the R language, which require learning times and delay the start of practice by weeks. There is a third possibility: using visual environments that allow you to make applications without knowing any language. Orange is one of these. It is visual but is based on Python, it allows you to make applications without knowing the language but also allows you to extend the application if and when you know Python. In addition, MySQL and SQLite coexist with Python and Orange Data Mining. This text uses Orange as an environment for experimentation and exercise in Data Science. It is possible to decide not to install Orange in case one is interested exclusively in SQL. In this case the reader will be free to skip the application exercises with Orange and return to them later if he/she feels the need. It should be clarified that this text follows the ICDL Syllabus and provides the skills associated with the modules in question, but it is not able to guarantee that the reader will be able to automatically pass the certification exam. In fact, it requires the purchase of a skill card, registration with a test center, compliance with a series of rules dictated by the national member organizations of the ICDL consortium and by the test center, and all of this is beyond what we can guarantee. After describing the installation of the programs used for the exercises, the text considers the types of data and their representations, including images and documents. The concepts of System, Information System and Database are introduced, as well as the most common practices of data security and privacy. The relational model and SQL are also explained with application examples with MySQL and SQLite. The various types of Joins, sorting, aggregation and grouping queries, integrity constraints, GRANT and REVOKE security features, views, indexing, Normal Forms and Normalization are then analyzed. Multi-user access to databases, interference and deadlock, locking techniques and transactions are then considered. Distributed databases and the possible options with MySQL and SQLite are then described. The limits of the relational model and the most common non-relational models (NOSQL) are outlined, the conceptual Entity-Relationship and object models according to ISO/UM and the process for moving from the problem text to the conceptual and logical relational model. The data integration process is outlined also with the use of data warehouses, data lakes and mediators, data cleaning, management of missing, repeated, anomalous and incorrect values, coding of categorical values. Finally, the project objectives are distinguished according to the best model, whether relational or non-relational. The text is accompanied by supporting material and it is possible to download the examples and test data.

Teaching and Learning with Digital Technologies in Higher Education Institutions in Africa
Author: Admire Mare
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 100080268X
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
This book critically examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has stimulated digital innovation within higher education using case studies from Africa. Imagining a future for post-pandemic higher education, it analyses the challenges and opportunities of remote teaching and learning. The book explores the structural barriers around access to higher education and how these were reconfigured and amplified by technology-dependent teaching and learning. Case studies from countries across Africa provide unique insights into the challenges experienced by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic, examining examples of emergent pedagogies such as online, mobile and social media-enhanced teaching, and blended learning. The chapters consider online assessment and teacher professional development, critically examining some of the benefits and structural challenges of digital technology integration in the context of pre-existing education disparities (such as students and teachers living in poverty-stricken and highly unequal societies). Offering invaluable insights into higher education in Africa, the book will be essential reading for researchers, scholars, and students in the fields of higher education study, digital education and educational technology, and African and comparative education. It will also be of interest to higher education managers and policymakers.

Technology Training for Educators From Past to Present
Author: Krishnan, Chitra
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1668440857
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 370
Book Description
In the past decade, rapid digitalization has changed many elements of society, and education is no exception. The tradition of teacher-centered education has been long-held in education and is still extremely well established. Due to the access of technology for knowledge and education, however, the teacher’s function in many classrooms has been to advise and guide as students take greater responsibility for their own learning using technology to collect information. Schools and universities across the world are beginning to redesign their learning spaces to enable this new model of education, foster more interaction and small group work, and use technology as an enabler of knowledge. Technology Training for Educators From Past to Present addresses the issues facing our education systems today and the role of technology and innovation in the global transformation of education. This book focuses on the fundamental need for educators at all levels to become knowledgeable with the technological teaching and learning tools at their disposal in order to best support student learning. Covering topics such as inclusion promotion in education, technology professional development, and online learning environments, this premier reference source is a valuable resource for educational administration and faculty, educators of K-12 and higher education, educational software developers, IT consultants, pre-service teachers, libraries, teaching colleges, researchers, and academicians.

Lit 21 - New Literary Genres in the Language Classroom
Author: Engelbert Thaler
Publisher: Narr Francke Attempto Verlag
ISBN: 3823301713
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 163
Book Description
Panta rhei. The world is in motion. So is literary production. New literary genres like digi fiction, text-talk novels, fan fiction or illustrated novels, to name a few, have developed over the last 20 years. And TEFL has to reflect these new trends in literature production. These are some of the reasons why this book is dedicated to the use of post-millennial literary genres in English Language Teaching. As all edited volumes in the SELT (Studies in English Language Teaching) series, it follows a triple aim: 1. Linking TEFL with related academic disciplines, 2. Balancing TEFL research and classroom practice, 3. Combining theory, methodology and exemplary lessons. This triple aim is reflected in the three-part structure of this volume: Part A (Theory), Part B (Methodology), Part C (Classroom) with several concrete lesson plans.
